SUVs now account for the largest share of India’s passenger-vehicle sales, and mid-size SUVs remain one of the fastest-growing sub-segments thanks to their mix of space, performance, and aspirational styling. Carmakers continue to pour investments into this space with new platforms, facelifts, and hybrids. In May 2026, the top 10 best-selling mid SUVs together crossed the 1,17,332 units compared to 88,675 units in May 2025. Let's check out the top 10 players of midsize SUVs, roaring in the Indian automotive market.

Rank 1: Mahindra Scorpio

Topping the May 2026 charts is the Mahindra Scorpio, which recorded 15,774 units, nudging past its closest rival and cementing Mahindra’s dominance in the body-on-frame SUV space. Volumes grew from 14,401 units a year ago, translating into a healthy 9.5% year-on-year uptick despite intensifying competition and a broader industry shift towards monocoque crossovers and hybrids.

With a segment share of 13.4 percent in May, the Scorpio’s blend of rugged underpinnings, improved refinement in the Scorpio N, and the continued appeal of the Scorpio Classic clearly resonates with both personal and commercial buyers across India.

Rank 2: Hyundai Creta,

The Hyundai Creta was a close second, registering 15,235 units in May 2026 and missing out on the top slot by a narrow margin. Despite that, its 13.0 percent share of the mid-SUV segment underscores just how entrenched the Creta brand has become over the past decade.

Sales grew modestly from 14,860 units in May 2025, a 2.5 percent increase that comes on the back of strong calendar-year 2025 volumes, when the Creta crossed the two lakh units mark and emerged as India’s best-selling SUV overall.

Rank 3: Maruti Suzuki Victoris

In third place sits the Maruti Suzuki Victoris with 10,853 units, a remarkable performance for a model that had no corresponding sales in May 2025. With a 9.2 percent segment share straight out of the gate, the Victoris demonstrates Maruti Suzuki’s growing confidence in taking on established rivals in the mid-size SUV space, complementing its existing Grand Vitara offering.

Rank 4: Mahindra Thar

Ranked fourth is the Mahindra Thar, which delivered 10,787 units in May 2026, up from 10,389 units in the same month last year. That 3.8 percent year-on-year growth is particularly impressive for a lifestyle-oriented 4x4 that commands a price premium and targets a more niche audience than mainstream crossovers.

Matching the Victoris with a 9.2% segment share, the Thar shows how widening powertrain choices, automatic variants and the impending five-door Rockster derivatives are helping Mahindra broaden the SUV’s appeal beyond hardcore enthusiasts to families and first-time SUV buyers.

Rank 5: Kia Seltos

The Kia Seltos grabbed fifth position with 10,597 units, reflecting one of the strongest growth stories in this chart. Volumes jumped from 6,082 units in May 2025, a staggering 74.2% year-on-year surge that underscores the impact of the recent facelift, refreshed interiors, and enhanced safety package. With a 9.0 percent share of the mid-SUV pie, the Seltos is clearly back in contention after a period of muted performance.

Rank 6: Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

At sixth place, the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara posted 9,366 units compared to 5,197 units in May last year, translating into a robust 80.2% year-on-year jump. Its 8.0 percent segment share is driven heavily by strong interest in the hybrid and all-wheel-drive variants. With mid-size SUV buyers increasingly warming up to electrified options, the Grand Vitara’s performance in May 2026 further validates Maruti Suzuki’s hybrid-first strategy before wider EV adoption takes hold.

Rank 7: Mahindra 7XO

Seventh on the table is Mahindra’s XUV 7XO, which clocked 9,338 units in May 2026. That’s a big leap from 6,435 units a year earlier, equating to 45.1% year-on-year growth as the model settles into the market and benefits from the halo of Mahindra’s broader SUV portfolio. Matching the Grand Vitara’s 8.0 percent share, the 7XO’s contemporary styling, tech-laden cabin, and strong diesel options make it particularly attractive to highway users.

Rank 8: Mahindra Bolero

The Mahindra Bolero, a staple in semi-urban and rural markets, secured eighth position with 8,933 units in May 2026. Interestingly, that’s almost identical to the 8,942 units recorded in May 2025, resulting in a marginal 0.1% decline and a 7.6 percent segment share this year. The near-flat performance underlines the Bolero’s remarkable stability.

Rank 9: Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder

In ninth place is the Toyota Hyryder with 8,664 units, up from 7,573 units a year earlier, translating into a healthy 14.4% year-on-year rise. The SUV now commands a 7.4 percent share of the mid-size segment, benefitting from Toyota’s strong hybrid positioning and the shared platform strategy with Maruti Suzuki’s Grand Vitara.

Rank 10: Mahindra 9S

Rounding off the list is the Mahindra 9S, a fresh entrant that still managed to find 3,502 buyers in May 2026 despite having no sales base in May 2025. With a 3.0 percent segment share, the 9S shows early signs of replicating Mahindra’s knack for creating rugged, value-driven SUVs that appeal strongly outside metro markets. As production ramps up and awareness builds through rural outreach and experiential drives.

CarBike 360 Says

May 2026’s top 10 midsize SUVs reveal a market where incumbents like the Creta continue to deliver consistent numbers while newer products such as the Victoris, 7XO, and 9S inject fresh excitement. Mahindra’s presence with five models in the top ten highlights the brand’s sharp SUV focus, even as Hyundai, Maruti Suzuki, Kia and Toyota refine their strategies with facelifts, hybrids and tech upgrades to defend share.
