Key Highlights

  • Mercedes-Benz India upgrades all petrol vehicles to E25 ethanol compatibility.
  • AMG E53 plug-in hybrid launched at Rs 1.45 crore ex-showroom.
  • Company strategy includes internal combustion engines electric vehicles and plug-in hybrids.

The announcement comes as India’s government and oil marketing companies plan to increase ethanol blending in petrol beyond the current E20 level. Mercedes-Benz India had previously raised concerns about fuel adulteration in E20 petrol, warning that inconsistent fuel quality could impact vehicle performance. The company called for stricter quality controls to address these issues.

Transition to E25 Compatibility

Mercedes-Benz India Managing Director and CEO Santosh Iyer confirmed the upgrade of the company’s entire petrol lineup to E25 compatibility. He stated, “Every Mercedes-Benz sold in India is E25 compatible. We transitioned to E20 to address the changing regulatory landscape. All our cars, including the one launched today, are E25 compatible.”

This announcement was made during the launch of the AMG E53 plug-in hybrid. The AMG E53 plug-in hybrid, priced at Rs 1.45 crore ex-showroom, is the first electrified AMG E-Class in India. The company emphasised that the shift to E25 compatibility aligns with its broader strategy to meet future fuel and emission requirements while offering a diverse range of powertrains.

Powertrain Options and Customer Choice

Mercedes-Benz India continues to offer a mix of internal combustion engines, battery electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids. The company said this approach allows customers to choose the powertrain that best fits their needs, rather than being limited by policy or market trends.

Iyer stated, “We believe our customers should have the freedom to choose the powertrain that suits their lifestyle and digital needs. This choice should not be dictated by policy but by customer preference.”

The automaker’s strategy is to remain agnostic about powertrain technologies. It will continue to provide internal combustion engines, electric vehicles, and plug-in hybrids under a unified product strategy. Iyer added, “We bring together different propulsion engines, factory electric cars, and turbine hybrids under a single platform, ensuring the Mercedes-Benz experience remains consistent.”

Industry Outlook

Mercedes-Benz’s move comes as India accelerates efforts to reduce vehicle emissions and promote cleaner fuels. The government’s ethanol blending programme is a key part of this strategy. By making its entire petrol lineup E25 compatible, Mercedes-Benz India is preparing for future regulatory changes and supporting the country’s environmental goals.

The company also noted that customer demand in India remains divided between conventional and electrified vehicles. This reinforces its decision to offer a mix of technologies, ensuring customers have a range of options as the market evolves.
