Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) announced that the Hyundai i20 has surpassed 1.5 million cumulative sales in India. The premium hatchback reached this milestone nearly 18 years after its introduction in 2008. The i20 has been available across three generations and several variants, including the standard, N Line, and Knight Edition.

Sales Milestone and Model Evolution

The Hyundai i20 has played a significant role in Hyundai's passenger vehicle lineup in India. Since its launch, the model has evolved through updates in design, technology, connectivity, and safety features. HMIL stated that the i20 has adapted to changing customer preferences while maintaining its position in the premium hatchback segment.

Sunil Moolchandani, National Sales Head at HMIL, said the i20 remains one of the most iconic products in the company’s portfolio. He noted that achieving 1.5 million cumulative sales reflects the trust and loyalty of customers over nearly two decades.

Current Generation Features

The current Hyundai i20 is powered by a 1.2-litre Kappa petrol engine. This engine is paired with either a five-speed manual transmission or an Intelligent Variable Transmission (IVT). The sportier i20 N Line variant features a 1.0-litre turbocharged GDi petrol engine, which can be matched with a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.

Hyundai equips the current i20 with several advanced features. These include six airbags as standard, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with navigation, connected car technology, electronic stability control, hill start assist, wireless charging, and a Bose audio system.

Market Position and Customer Response

The Hyundai i20 continues to cater to the premium hatchback market in India. The model’s sustained popularity is attributed to its regular updates and the availability of multiple variants. HMIL emphasises that the i20’s evolution has helped it meet the expectations of Indian car buyers.

The i20’s sales achievement highlights its strong presence in the competitive hatchback segment. Hyundai’s focus on design, safety, and technology has contributed to the model’s enduring appeal among Indian customers.
