Mahindra New Sub-4-Metre SUV Spotted Testing in Spiti Valley

Mahindra's upcoming sub-4-metre SUV prototype has been spotted undergoing high-altitude testing in Kaza, Spiti Valley, Himachal Pradesh. The region sits at an elevation of 3,650 metres above sea level, making it a challenging environment for vehicle trials. This suggests Mahindra is evaluating the SUV's performance in demanding conditions before its official launch.

Key Highlights

  • Mahindra tests new sub-4-metre SUV prototype at 3650 metres in Spiti Valley.
  • Prototype features six-slat grille LED headlamps and ADAS radar module.
  • Based on the Nu_IQ platform supporting petrol, diesel, hybrid and electric powertrains.
  • Expected to launch in 2027 above the XUV 3XO in Mahindra's line-up.

Prototype Design and Features

The prototype is believed to be the production version of the Vision S concept, which Mahindra first revealed in August 2025. The new model will likely be positioned above the Mahindra XUV 3XO in Mahindra's line-up. At the front, the SUV features Mahindra’s new six-slat grille and sleek LED headlamps. These headlamps may use the L-shaped design introduced with the Vision S concept.

The front fascia also displays a muscular clamshell bonnet and a prominent lower air dam. The centre trim of the air dam is concealed and could house a radar module for Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). A dark patch on the windscreen likely indicates the placement of rain sensors.

Spy images reveal pronounced wheel arches, a panoramic sunroof, and large outer rear-view mirrors. The prototype continues the Vision S concept's design language with short overhangs, flush door handles, a flat roofline, chunky side cladding, deep wheel wells, a rising beltline, and a fuel-filler cap above the left-rear wheel arch.

Rear Styling and Platform Details

The rear of the prototype features vertically orientated LED taillamps and a spare wheel mounted on a side-hinged tailgate. Additional elements include a stubby roof spoiler with an integrated high-mounted stop lamp, a sharkfin antenna, and a flush rear bumper. The boxy proportions and upright stance from the Vision S concept are evident in this prototype.

Interior details remain limited in the latest spy shots. However, earlier images showed an upright dashboard with an integrated infotainment display, curved AC vents, physical switchgear, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Vision S concept is based on Mahindra’s new Nu_IQ platform. This platform supports petrol, diesel, hybrid, and fully electric powertrains, offering flexibility for future variants. Mahindra has not announced a specific launch date for the new compact SUV, but it is expected to debut in 2027. These latest developments indicate Mahindra’s continued focus on expanding its SUV line-up and testing new models in diverse environments.
