TVS Motors recently revealed a 300cc engine, RT-XD4 at the MotoSoul 2024 event. This new engine is developed entirely in-house at TVS’s R&D facility in Hosur, Tamil Nadu. While this engine may not include a significant increase in power and torque compared to the existing 312cc engine, it can provide better fuel efficiency and improved engine cooling.
Key Specifications of the RT-XD4 Engine
The RT-XD4 engine features a 299cc block with a bore of 78 mm and a stroke of 62.6 mm. It produces 34.5 BHP at 9,000 rpm and 28.5 Nm at 7,000 rpm. This single-cylinder powerhouse has a dual overhead camshaft, a plasma-coated cylinder, and dual cooling jackets. Furthermore, it includes liquid cooling for an air/oil-cooled crankcase that ensures optimal performance even under demanding conditions.
A standout feature of the RT-XD4 is its 6-speed gearbox, paired with a slipper clutch that makes gear shifting as smooth as butter. Additionally, the engine is equipped with a ride-by-wire system and will offer a quick-shifter option for those looking for a thrilling ride on the go.
How RT-XD4 is Different from the Existing 312cc Engine?
When compared to the existing 312.12 cc engine, which generates 35.6 PS and 28.7 Nm, the new RT-XD4 engine presents a fine-tuned case for advancement regardless of its lower displacement. The existing engine has bore and stroke measurements of 80 mm and 62.1 mm, respectively. While performance figures are closely matched, the RT-XD4’s platform could lead to superior performance, overall. TVS claims that this new engine features highly linear torque characteristics for a seamless riding experience on the roads.
Moreover, there’s speculation that the RT-XD4 could be lighter than its predecessor, potentially resulting in a higher power-to-weight ratio. This could also translate into better fuel efficiency on the horizon. From a business perspective, lower production costs could also be achieved as TVS optimises its design and development expenditures over time.
What TVS motorcycles are set to utilize the RT-XD4 engine?
TVS has yet to confirm when the RT-XD4 will be produced commercially, but there are indications for some development ahead in the future. The company has trademarked the name TVS Apache RTX, and spy-shots have showcased a new 300cc adventure bike that is in testing right now. Therefore, this model is likely to be the first to use the RT-XD4 engine. As per the reports, the testing phase is almost completed, and TVS will roll out the bike into the market around mid-2025.
With models like the RTR 310 Streetfighter and Apache RR 310 already in their lineup, introducing an adventure bike will add TVS's offerings in the 300cc segment and boost their presence in the touring motorcycle market.
