Uno Minda Limited has approved a capital expenditure of Rs 320 crore to set up a new greenfield manufacturing facility in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Maharashtra. The plant will assemble complete seating systems for four-wheeler passenger vehicles, targeting domestic automakers. The company expects commercial operations to begin by the fourth quarter of the 2028 fiscal year.
Key Highlights
- Uno Minda approves a Rs 320 crore investment for a new seating systems plant in Maharashtra.
- Joint venture with Tachi-S to assemble complete four-wheeler passenger vehicle seating.
- Commercial operations expected to start by Q4 of fiscal year 2028.
- Anchor supply contract secured from a major automotive OEM.
- Industry trade agreements and regulatory changes may impact export and supplier strategies.
Joint Venture and Expansion Plans
The project will be executed through Uno Minda Tachi-S Seating Private Limited, a joint venture with Tachi-S Company Limited of Tokyo. The partnership began in September 2022, initially focusing on manufacturing seat recliners for passenger vehicles. This new phase will expand the joint venture's capabilities to assemble full seating systems, increasing the value of content supplied per vehicle.
Uno Minda Tachi-S Seating Private Limited has already secured an anchor supply contract from a major automotive original equipment manufacturer. This contract was obtained before the start of construction, ensuring a steady demand for the new facility's output.
Strategic Goals and Industry Context
Ravi Mehra, Managing Director of Uno Minda Limited, stated that the move into integrated seating systems aligns with the company's strategy to expand its presence in premium vehicle cabin components. The expansion aims to strengthen Uno Minda's position in the domestic automotive supply chain.
In addition to the seating systems project, Uno Minda is pursuing emission reduction initiatives in its e-MHCV and e-SCV divisions. These efforts support regulatory requirements set by the NCR planning board. The company is also monitoring industry developments, such as trade agreements with the UK and the European Union and a proposed US trade deal. These agreements could improve export opportunities for Indian automotive suppliers as global automakers diversify sourcing.
Regulatory and Market Developments
The automotive industry is also seeing proposed changes to regulatory thresholds and fiscal incentives for high-end vehicle models. Luxury brands are advocating for price-based limits, which could affect market dynamics and supplier strategies. Industry associations, including ACMA, believe that new trade pacts and regulatory adjustments may benefit Indian component manufacturers in the long term.
