Volvo Cars India announces plans to double its electric vehicle (EV) lineup by 2025, with the launch of the EX30 and EX90 electric SUVs. Jyoti Malhotra, Managing Director of Volvo Cars India, confirms the company's commitment to bolstering its presence in the EV segment.
Growing EV Sales in India
In 2023, Volvo India recorded significant growth in EV sales, accounting for 28 percent of the company's total sales. The XC40 Recharge and C40 Recharge contributed to this success, with 690 units sold. Looking ahead, Volvo anticipates EVs to make up one-third of its total sales in 2024.
Projections and Market Trends
Malhotra expresses optimism, projecting a 33 percent penetration of EVs in the luxury segment by the end of 2024. He envisions a broader shift, with 50 percent of luxury car sales in India comprising EVs by 2030. Volvo's commitment aligns with its global vision to become a fully electric brand by 2030.

Local Assembly and Manufacturing Considerations
Volvo is actively exploring the possibility of local assembly for both the EX30 and EX90 models in India. Malhotra acknowledges the potential of India to become a manufacturing base for Volvo cars, catering not only to domestic demand but also to exports.
Direct-to-Customer Model
Volvo has adopted a direct-to-customer sales model for its electric cars, emphasizing positive indicators. Malhotra hints at the possibility of adding Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles to their portfolio in the coming years.
The Future Lineup
In 2024, Volvo plans to introduce new variants of the XC40 and C40 Recharge lineup. These variants may include entry-level, single-motor Rear-Wheel Drive (RWD) options with a 69kWh battery pack, supplementing the existing Twin-Motor All-Wheel Drive (AWD) models.
About EX30 and EX90
The EX90, unveiled in 2022, stands as Volvo's flagship EV, featuring a seven-seater configuration. Built on the EV SPA2 architecture, it shares similarities with the Polestar 3, offering a remarkable 600km range on the WLTP cycle with a powerful 517hp motor.

Positioned as an entry-level electric SUV, the EX30 utilizes parent company Geely's SEA platform. Drawing inspiration from the flagship EX90, the EX30 boasts a top-spec Twin Motor Performance model with a 69kWh battery, delivering 427hp of power.
CarBike360 Says
Volvo's strategic move to diversify its EV lineup signifies its commitment to sustainable mobility solutions, aligning with the evolving automotive landscape. As the industry gears up for electrification, Volvo aims to play a pivotal role in shaping India's electric future.
