The Indian automotive market is competitive, and for any brand to cover every aspect of drivers' perception is a challenging task. Nowadays, sedans are no longer the preferred choice for Indian buyers, and as a result, sedan sales are decreasing month after month, year after year. Some brands are more focused on providing crossover SUVs to gain market share, while others simply rely on hefty discounts. However, one particular model shifts this emerging preference: the Volkswagen Virtus.

In a recent report, the Volkswagen Virtus is emerging as the best-selling sedan in the carmaker’s portfolio. With total sales exceeding 13,853 units from January 2025 to August 2025. The brand also announced a 9% year-on-year increase over the previous year. In June, the Volkswagen Virtus celebrated its third anniversary since its inception in June 2022 under the Volkswagen India 2.0 market strategy.

The Indian automotive market has slowed the growth of premium sedans in the market. The market for all sedan vehicles altered because customers were now shifting towards crossovers and SUVs. Even some big names in the market, like Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Hyundai Aura, and Honda Amaze, are facing a monthly drop of 2% in the Indian market. However, Virtus has built steady momentum, crossing the cumulative sales mark of 61,000 units domestically and over 81,000 units exported overseas.

This sudden increase in sales figures represents Volkswagen's growing momentum in India when sedans are considered. Beyond raw sales figures, Virtus's success lies in its strategic blend of German engineering, premium features, and localised cost efficiency. All these factors have played a major role in crafting a strong niche in the Indian sedan market.

Capturing the declining market with steady growth

The Indian sedan market is facing multiple challenges. Yet, with a few models such as the Maruti Suzuki Dzire, Skoda Slavia, Hyundai Aura, and Honda Amaze, the market is still in resurgence. With Dzire still dominating the sedan market, it could not surpass the hype and market captured by the crossover and SUVs. On the other hand, Virtus has consistently broken this declining trend, leading the segment with over 13,853 units sold in FY25.

Since its launch in June 2022, it has had robust month-on-month growth in 2025 and a 33% market share within the compact sedan segment. This shows that the Volkswagen is resonating as a people’s car by offering what the driver or the actual buyer needs from the car, especially when it’s a sedan.

Design

The sedan was developed on the India-specific MQB AO IN platform, which is a similar platform to the one used by the Skoda Slavia and the Volkswagen Taigun. This make-in-India mechanical manufacturing has helped the brand to roll out with a 95% local workforce in the Chakan plant, Pune. This approach has allowed Volkswagen to price the Virtus competitively without compromising on quality or features.

Why do buyers prefer to choose the VW Virtus over any other premium mid-size sedan?

The answer lies under the Volkswagen specimen and people’s perspective. With contenders like the Honda City, Hyundai Verna, and Skoda Slavia, the Volkswagen Virtus stands out due to its unique value proposition:

  • Safety: The Virtus carries a 5-star Global NCAP rating and is equipped with 6 airbags and advanced active safety features.
  • Performance: The Volkswagen Virtus comes with two powertrain options, which deliver lively performance and offer an efficient driving experience in the city as well as on highways.
  • Updated Features: With a sophisticated design, the car also offers top-notch features such as ventilated front seats, a digital infotainment system, ambient lighting, adaptive cruise control, and many more.
  • Build Quality: This is the most prominent factor that makes most buyers look upon the Virtus as their favorite sedan. The German-engineered solid build provides both durability and refinement that elevate the driving experience.

Engine and Performance

The 2025 edition of the Volkswagen Virtus comes with a sleek and sporty exterior design. When looking at the car at first sight, you may notice that the front fascia of the car has a rugged, sporty grill integrated with standard LED headlamps and ambient rear LED taillights. Furthermore, additional chrome accents can be seen with premium leather upholstery inside the cabin on GT variants.

Under the hood, buyers have access to two turbocharged petrol engines. The first is the standard 1.0L TSI turbo-petrol engines, which are capable of producing 115 HP and 178 Nm of torque. While the other engine is more powerful and offers a 1.5L TSI EVO turbo-petrol engine, generating 148 HP along with 250 Nm of peak torque. Both manual and automatic transmission options provide flexibility to cater to diverse urban and highway driving needs.

What’s ahead amid the market shift?

The car is expected by late 2025 or early 2026. The planned facelift with upgraded technology and refreshed design demonstrates Volkswagen's intent to keep the sedan competitive even as the market shifts towards SUVs and electric vehicles.

Conclusion
