Tesla introduced the Model Y to India last year, marking its entry into the luxury electric vehicle segment. Since launch, the Model Y has seen steady growth. Earlier this year, Tesla added the six-seater Model Y L variant. However, the five-seater base Premium RWD variant remains a practical choice for many buyers.

​Exterior and Design Details

The Tesla Model Y Premium RWD shares its exterior design with the top-spec Premium RWD long-range variant. The front features a connected LED light bar and slim LED headlamps. The bumper design is minimal, with black cladding as the main element. The side profile includes a sloping roof, flush door handles, black wheel arch cladding, and 19-inch 'crossflow' alloy wheels with grey aero covers.

At the rear, the Model Y has connected LED taillamps and an integrated boot spoiler, giving it a sporty appearance. Six exterior color options are available: Stealth Grey (standard), Pearl White, Quicksilver, Ultra Red, Diamond Black, and Glacier Blue. All colors except Stealth Grey incur an additional cost.

Interior Features and Comfort

​The interior follows Tesla's minimalist design, with most controls managed through a central touchscreen. Slim AC vents run across the dashboard. The cabin features a three-spoke steering wheel, ambient lighting, and a full glass roof as standard.

The centre console offers storage, dual wireless charging pads, and a large armrest. Rear seats can slide and recline, and passengers have dedicated AC vents and a small touchscreen for controls. The standard cabin theme is all-black, with an optional dual-tone black and grey scheme available for Rs 95,000 extra.

Technology, Safety, and Performance

​The base Model Y includes a 16-inch touchscreen infotainment system, powered, heated, and ventilated front seats, power-adjustable AC vents, powered rear seats, an 8-inch rear touchscreen, a 9-speaker audio system, ambient lighting, connected car technology, and dual wireless phone chargers. Compared to the Model Y L trim, the base variant mainly lacks a 19-speaker audio system.

Safety features include multiple airbags, electronic stability control, all-wheel disc brakes, ADAS, a 360-degree camera, front and rear parking sensors, and an electronic parking brake with auto-hold. Full Self-Driving (FSD) capability is available as a Rs 6 lakh option, to be activated via a future software update.

Tesla does not disclose battery size or power output but claims the base Premium RWD variant delivers about 500 km on a single charge. The Model Y supports 250 kW charging, adding up to 238 km of range in 15 minutes using Tesla's Supercharger network.

Pricing and Competition

The Model Y Premium RWD is priced at Rs 59.89 lakh (ex-showroom, before options). It competes with luxury EVs such as the Kia EV6, Hyundai Ioniq 5, BYD Sealion 7, and Volvo EC40. The base trim offers most features found in the higher variant, making it a strong contender in its segment.
