The 2026 Beijing Auto Show has revealed a significant shift in the global automotive industry. Chinese carmakers are moving into the premium segment, challenging the dominance of established German brands. The event, opening this week as the world's largest motor show, highlights how Chinese manufacturers are targeting buyers who once preferred Volkswagen, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz.
Key Highlights
- Chinese automakers target premium segment at 2026 Beijing Auto Show
- Volkswagen, BMW and Mercedes-Benz see declining sales in China
- 181 world premieres and 71 concept cars featured at the show
- Chinese brands expand globally despite EU tariffs on electric vehicles
Chinese Brands Enter Premium Market

Chinese companies such as Geely and Nio are launching high-specification, feature-rich vehicles. These models aim to attract customers who previously considered German luxury brands. The show will feature 181 world premieres and 71 concept cars. Many of these are large, premium "9-series" SUVs, reflecting a new focus on luxury and advanced technology.
Bo Yu, Greater China country manager at JATO Dynamics, stated that the industry dynamic has shifted. He explained, "The price war has turned into a value-for-money war." Chinese automakers are not only competing on price but also on quality and features. Their ambitions extend beyond China, as they continue to undercut European rivals even after absorbing EU tariffs on electric vehicles. Hybrids and combustion-engine models from China face no such duties, giving them an additional advantage.
German Brands Face Declining Sales
The timing is challenging for German carmakers. Volkswagen, once the top-selling brand in China for 25 years, lost its lead to BYD in 2024 and dropped to third place behind Geely in 2025. BMW and Mercedes-Benz have also experienced falling sales. Robert Cisek, Volkswagen's China CEO, acknowledged that younger buyers may now see Volkswagen as a brand for older generations.
In response, German manufacturers are increasing partnerships with Chinese technology firms. They are working with companies like Momenta, which specializes in autonomous driving, and ECARX, a software developer. German brands are also accelerating the release of new electric models to regain market share. Despite the global reputation of "Made in Germany," a January survey by Berylls by AlixPartners found that younger consumers, including those in China, are more willing to consider alternatives.
Changing Consumer Demographics
Demographic trends are also influencing the market. The average Chinese car buyer is now over 40 years old, leading to higher demand for larger, more premium vehicles. Chinese brands are well-positioned to meet this demand. Meanwhile, younger buyers show less interest in the European prestige that once justified higher prices.
The 2026 Beijing Auto Show, running until 3 May, underscores China’s expanding influence in the automotive sector. It also highlights the evolving competitive landscape in the world’s largest car market.

As the 2026 Beijing Auto Show demonstrates, Chinese automakers are no longer chasing volume alone. With cutting-edge EV platforms, sophisticated design, and advanced technology, these brands are positioning themselves as serious global contenders. The shift signals a new era where “Made in China” increasingly stands for innovation, luxury, and competitive excellence.
