Top 5 problems in electric cars and bikes.

Launch of electric vehicles in India is like a dream come true. It was like a fantasy sometime back which is now turning into reality with many companies boldly launching their EV vehicles and most of them getting success. But we still have some questions which are still unanswered and keep out minds puzzled.
Can India become an EV ready country and in how much time? Or will Indian consider launch of EV a boon or a ban?
It has been a year since Tata’s electric car, the Tata Nexon EV was launched. The company has sold 3000 units in its first year. This looks like a successful number, keeping in mind the operating market like India. While the charging stations are still not so common on Indian roads, a slow shift to a higher number of electric cars and bikes seems to be imminent. When talking about electric cars specifically, Tesla is a natural mention and the first name in almost every conversation. Led by the world’s richest man, Elon Musk, Tesla recently confirmed the opening of a new manufacturing centre in India. Since that is still at least a couple of years away, owning Tesla in India is still a sign of luxury and is a premium affair.
There is an article, where Union Minister Nitin Gadkari mentioned about the big 2021 arrival of Tesla in the Indian market. The Model 3, Tesla’s best-selling and most affordable one to this point, will be imported in large numbers to be sold directly in India. After the affordable Model 3, the Tesla Model S is set to make its debut in the India market, per latest update. There are other models in line expected to get launched. While all of this sounds beautiful, but there are still couple of challenges that EV could possibly face.
As Indian economy is caught up in a slowdown, the future of the automobile industry is pinned on electric vehicles. And EV technology in India is, in turn, highly dependent on innovation and government incentives. At the same time, the government has to tackle the slowdown and invest in future-ready technology at the same time. This has led to a deep dichotomy in the Indian electric vehicles market which has put the future of EV technology in India in a bit of a muddle.
While there is no dearth of government incentives in India, the lack of adequate infrastructure and unaffordable price of EVs are felt by both industry and consumers alike.
To understand where the next phase of development will happen, one has to look at the current problems for electric vehicle adoption in India. These range from systemic issues to consumer mindset, but all of them have a cumulative effect on the future of EVs in India.
Infrastructure for electric vehicles. The most talked-about challenge related to EVs is the infrastructure support provided by the country for them to be convenient. Couple of other issues can be like
• Charging time.
• Service of electric vehicles.
• Breakdowns and awareness.
• No assured government policy.
Let us now discuss each one the issue at length.

  1. Infrastructure for electric vehicles
The most talked-about point related to EVs is the infrastructure support provided by the country for them to be convenient. This mainly leads us to the charging points that are to be very essentials for EVs. Practically, electric vehicles cannot be used on highways as there are no charging points across highways in the country.
  2. Charging time
Charging time is a big drawback in electric vehicles as most of the Indian consumers are impatient and would not like to wait for long to charge their vehicles. Although there is fast charging available on most of them, it usually takes an hour to charge about 80% of the vehicle, which is indeed a long wait.
  3. Service of electric vehicles
The exact servicing costs are yet unknown for these kinds of vehicles. Many service centres are known for duping the customers citing false problems on their cars. EVs will only lead to causing more problems in this area.
  4. Breakdowns and awareness.
Considering the scenario of breakdown in the electric car or an electric two-wheeler, one cannot just call a normal mechanic to repair the electric vehicle. There are required skillset necessary to repair an EV. In that case, one need to call some company authorized service personnel only which will lead to the next point. There is a general lack of awareness about EVs and their mechanical systems. Therefore, until a substantial number of them are not there on the road, most of the mechanics would not know about their complete systems, and therefore it will lead to causing inconvenience for the consumer.
  5. No assured government policy
European countries have welcomed electric vehicles to their country by government interventions like reducing their tax rates and providing subsidies in certain ways. They have clear rules and policies made especially for Electric vehicles to encourage buyers. With some even planning to allow only EVs to be sold eventually. In India though it is a different story, as the government has never been clear from the start about their policies on EV vehicles. This has left automakers confused about their plans for electric vehicles. This translates to the consumers in a way that the customer end up paying more for electric vehicles.
It is a good thing that car manufacturers are putting out cars such as the Hyundai Kona, the Tata Nexon EV, and the MG ZS EV and devoted to being future-ready and also prioritizing them. Hopefully, the government sees that and could solve all the problems relating to EVs.
