Toyota is undergoing changes as Akio Toyoda transitions from President to Chairman of the board on April 1, 2023, when Koji Sato will take over the presidency.

Sato currently holds the position of President of Lexus and Gazoo Racing, as well as the Chief Branding Officer.

While some may worry that Toyoda's departure from day-to-day operations may erode Toyota's present reputation as a maker of intriguing, if not thrilling, automobiles, Sato was picked in part because he, too, is an enthusiast.

Sato will also succeed Toyoda as President and Chief Executive Officer. Takeshi Uchiyamada, the current Chairman of the Board, will remain a member of the Board of Directors.

The Legacy of Akio Toyoda

Akio Toyoda, 66, is the grandson of Toyota Motor Corporation Founder Kiichiro Toyoda.

He took over as President of the family business in June 2009, and we can see him as one of the primary driving forces behind the brand's ambition and drive to manufacture and sell more interesting vehicles.

Under his leadership, we've witnessed the introduction of great Toyota halo vehicles ranging from the GT86 to the GR Yaris and GR Corolla, as well as a radical shift in the attractiveness of more mundane models.

Ordinary Toyotas are now more appealing to the eye and more enjoyable to drive, while maintaining their famed dependability. This is despite – or maybe because of – Toyoda's appearance before the United States Congress in 2010, where he was called to testify on the company's high number of global recalls at the time.

Toyoda is also renowned for being an avid racing driver, competing under the alias Morizo Kinoshita (and even wrecking the original GR Yaris prototype, which led to his close involvement in the vehicle's subsequent development).

Akio was not a fan of EVs

Although there are many reasons to praise Toyoda's reign, many will point out how tardy Toyota has been to embrace the transition to electric mobility. While it was a clear pioneer of hybrid technology, it has been significantly slower than many competitors in producing completely electric vehicles.

Toyoda has expressed his lack of enthusiasm in this regard. Although he unveiled a whole series of electric Toyota concept cars destined for future production at a major press event in December 2021, he claimed as recently as December 2022 to be among the 'silent majority' in the car industry that doubts battery electric vehicles (BEVs) are the only solution for the future.

Speaking to journalists in Thailand, Toyoda reiterated his belief that a variety of powertrain options, including those incorporating internal combustion engines like the hybrids Toyota pioneered, as well as alternative energy sources like hydrogen fuel cells, will be required for many years to come.

"Because of my tremendous enthusiasm for automobiles, I am an old-fashioned person in terms of digitalization, electric vehicles, and linked cars," he noted during the announcement of the management changes. "My limitation is that I cannot move beyond being a car man."

"The new team can achieve what I can't do", he said of his decision to stand down as president. "I need to take a step back to allow young people to start the new chapter of what mobility should look like in the future".

Koji Sato and the Future of Toyota

Toyoda asked Sato whether he would take over as CEO during the same trip to Thailand.

Toyoda has also claimed that Sato's mission is to transform Toyota into a "mobility business," albeit nothing is known about what such a plan would entail.

More significantly for individuals like us, we can see that Sato is just as much a car fan as Toyoda, if not more so.

Takashi Watanabe, Head Engineer for Lexus Electrified, when asked about the Lexus Electrified Sport concept moving into production gave an insight on Sato.

"Koji Sato [then-President of Lexus and Gazoo Racing] is a car enthusiast".

"He wants to express his love within the Lexus sphere as well. He is the true boss of Lexus Electrified, thus he decides what type of technological advancement is required. Plus, as long as Sato remains president, I can do whatever I want!!"

Toyota Leadership change and its implications on Indian Auto Industry

Well, it seems as Toyota will be in capable hands in the future. More so when India has a deep relation with Toyota, this will definitely affect the Indian market as well. Koji Sato is someone who believes in experimentation and bringing out new technologies globally. And we do want Toyota to bring the best in-class cars here in India as well.
