Stellantis has announced it will use a Tata Motors platform to develop and manufacture a new Jeep SUV in India for global export. The confirmation came during the group’s 2026 Investor Day. Gregoire Olivier, Stellantis Asia Pacific COO, stated that Tata Motors will provide a "highly competitive platform" for the new Jeep, which will be "developed in India, assembled in India, in our Stellantis-Tata JV in India, for the world."

Key Highlights

  • Stellantis will build a new Jeep SUV in India using Tata's ARGOS platform
  • The SUV will launch in 2028 and export to over 50 countries
  • Tata will supply the 1.5-litre turbo petrol engine for the new Jeep
  • The Ranjangaon plant will assemble the SUV under the Tata-Stellantis joint venture

The new Jeep SUV is scheduled for a 2028 launch. It will be exported to more than 50 countries across the Asia Pacific, the Middle East, Africa, and South America. Although Stellantis has not officially named the platform, industry sources indicate the Jeep will use the ARGOS architecture. This modular platform also underpins the Tata Sierra. ARGOS stands for All-Terrain Ready, Omni-Energy, and Geometry Scalable. It supports petrol, diesel, hybrid, and electric powertrains and accommodates all-wheel drive, which is essential for the Jeep brand. Jeep requires every model line to offer at least one four-wheel-drive variant.

The agreement is structured as a platform and engine supply deal. Tata Motors will license the ARGOS platform to Stellantis and supply its 1.5-litre turbocharged direct injection petrol engine. This engine also powers the Tata Sierra, Harrier, and Safari. Jeep will independently design, engineer, and develop the vehicle’s body, interior, and other components. Tata Motors will not co-develop the product and has no financial stake in its commercial success. Global Stellantis teams, not the India unit, will lead vehicle development and sourcing.

The new Jeep SUV will likely be assembled at the Ranjangaon plant near Pune. This facility is central to the Tata-Stellantis 50:50 joint venture, Fiat India Automobiles Private Limited (FIAPL). The plant currently produces four Jeep models and three Tata models, with over 1.37 million vehicles manufactured since the JV began.

Platform Selection and Technical Considerations

Stellantis chose the ARGOS platform after evaluating several alternatives. The company considered its own STLA-M platform but ruled it out due to high localization costs for India. Developing a new platform from scratch was also dropped, as it would require one to two billion dollars and five to seven years of engineering time. The Citroen C-Cubed platform, used by Stellantis India for Citroen, was eliminated because it supports only front-wheel drive and its electronics are outdated for modern ADAS and connected features. ARGOS offers an Ethernet-capable E/E architecture, which is more advanced than current Stellantis India platforms.

The 1.5-litre TGDI engine from Tata addresses a long-standing issue for Jeep in India. The Compass lost its 1.4-litre turbo petrol engine due to BS6 norms and production shutdowns. Attempts to source the 1.3-litre Firefly engine from Brazil were dropped for cost reasons.

As a result, the Compass and Meridian have lacked petrol options, narrowing their appeal as diesel sales decline. Tata’s 1.5 TGDI engine meets Euro 7 and BS7 norms, making it suitable for India and international markets.

A diesel variant is unlikely, as the 2.0-litre MultiJet diesel does not fit the ARGOS platform, and the Sierra’s 1.5 diesel may be underpowered for the new Jeep. An EV variant remains possible, given ARGOS’s multi-energy design and Stellantis’s CAFE compliance needs in India.

Background and Market Impact

The Tata-Stellantis partnership dates back to a 2006 manufacturing alliance. The Ranjangaon plant’s infrastructure and localisation capabilities are central to Stellantis’s strategy for the new Jeep. Localisation targets are set to rise from about 65 percent to nearly 90 percent. Jeep has lost ground in India as the Compass and Meridian face strong competition from Hyundai, Kia, and Tata. Both models are challenged by pricing and the lack of a petrol option. The new Jeep, expected to compete with the Tata Sierra and Hyundai Creta in the mid-size segment, is positioned as the start of a renewed India product push. Whether this model is the same as the Jeep SUV planned for 2027 under Stellantis’s India 2.0 strategy remains unclear.

CarBike 360 Says

For Tata Motors, the deal marks a milestone, with an Indian platform and engine supporting a global Jeep sold in over 50 countries. The arrangement validates the ARGOS platform’s technical and commercial value. For Jeep, the Tata platform provides a crucial opportunity. For Indian engineering, it is significant recognition. A new Jeep SUV built on Indian foundations and exported globally is a notable achievement for both companies.
