Bharat Taxi has rapidly expanded its driver onboarding program in Mumbai, aiming to improve earnings and welfare for auto-rickshaw and cab drivers. The initiative, led by a cooperative, was launched at an event in Kandivali (West) attended by over 500 drivers, transport union members, and cooperative representatives. Union Minister Piyush Goyal, who is also the Lok Sabha MP from North Mumbai, emphasized the program's goal to support drivers, who are vital to urban mobility.
Key Highlights
- Bharat Taxi has onboarded 5.17 lakh drivers since its launch in February 2026
- The platform now operates in Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh and Lucknow
- Over 50 lakh customers have used Bharat Taxi services so far
- Government plans more welfare schemes for drivers on the platform
- Partial electrification of fleets could significantly boost driver incomes
Programme Launch and Expansion
The cooperative behind Bharat Taxi is registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. It was established on June 6, 2025, by eight national-level cooperative institutions and officially launched on February 5, 2026. Since its launch, Bharat Taxi has grown rapidly. According to an official release from the minister’s office, the platform has onboarded 5.17 lakh drivers and served over 50 lakh customers to date. Bharat Taxi now operates in Delhi NCR, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Lucknow, with the potential to expand further.
Operational Impact and Future Plans
Bharat Taxi currently facilitates more than 25,000 rides per day. Minister Goyal stated that the government is planning additional welfare schemes to ensure drivers receive benefits equal to or greater than those offered by private ride-hailing firms. He highlighted the economic benefits of transitioning auto-rickshaws and taxis from CNG to electric vehicles. Even a partial shift to electric vehicles in regions with over one lakh autos and taxis could significantly boost driver incomes.
Goyal expressed confidence that Bharat Taxi could become a leading national mobility platform with collective effort from all stakeholders. The government continues to work on initiatives to improve the welfare and economic prospects of drivers across India.
Driver Welfare and Electrification
The initiative places a strong focus on driver welfare. The cooperative-led model aims to provide drivers with direct support and improved working conditions.
The government’s push for electrification is expected to further enhance driver earnings and reduce operational costs. Bharat Taxi’s growth reflects a broader movement towards cooperative-driven mobility solutions in India. The platform’s expansion and welfare initiatives signal a shift in the urban mobility landscape, with a focus on sustainable growth and improved livelihoods for drivers.
CarBike 360 Says
Bharat Taxi’s rapid expansion and growing driver network highlight its strong position in India’s competitive ride-hailing space. With over 5 lakh drivers onboard and a presence in key cities, the company is clearly focused on scaling efficiently. As demand for reliable transport rises, Bharat Taxi’s continued growth could play a crucial role in shaping the future of urban mobility in India.
