Hyundai Motor India Limited has launched a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model for its Creta Electric SUV. This new ownership structure reduces the initial ex-showroom price of the base variant to Rs 10.99 lakh. The battery service costs Rs 3.9 per kilometer driven, separating the battery cost from the vehicle price.

Key Highlights

  • Hyundai launches Battery-as-a-Service for Creta Electric at Rs 10.99 lakh ex-showroom.
  • Battery subscription costs Rs 3.9 per kilometer with an eight-year amortization period.
  • Creta Electric now includes a side footstep and a 7.4 kW wall box charger as standard.

Battery Subscription Model Details

The BaaS model aims to lower the upfront cost of electric vehicles. Customers pay for the battery based on usage, at Rs 3.9 per kilometer. This matches the introductory price of the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara, which also starts at Rs 10.99 lakh ex-showroom. However, the e-Vitara’s BaaS rate is slightly higher, beginning at Rs 3.99 per kilometer.

Hyundai’s approach targets the high entry price that often limits electric vehicle adoption. By moving a significant portion of the vehicle’s value into post-purchase expenses, Hyundai hopes to make electric vehicles more accessible. The battery financing plan assumes an eight-year amortization period. It applies an estimated interest rate of 8.75 percent on 90 percent of the total battery value.

Alongside the new billing structure, Hyundai has updated the Creta Electric’s features. The electric SUV now includes an integrated side footstep as standard on select trims. This addition responds to customer feedback and aims to improve convenience.

The home charging setup has also been upgraded. Hyundai now provides a 7.4 kW wall box charger with the vehicle, replacing previous lower-capacity chargers. This change is based on direct consumer data and is intended to improve home charging efficiency.

Market Impact and Competitive Landscape

The Hyundai Creta Electric shows new pricing and a subscription model, positioning it directly against the Maruti Suzuki e-Vitara in the compact electric SUV segment. Both vehicles now start at Rs 10.99 lakh ex-showroom, but Hyundai offers a slightly lower battery subscription rate. This move is expected to influence pricing strategies among other manufacturers in the segment.

Hyundai’s leadership has stated that the new model is designed to change how customers view the cost of electric vehicles. By spreading battery costs over time, the company aims to encourage more buyers to consider electric options.

CarBike 360 Says

Hyundai’s introduction of the battery-as-a-service model with the Creta Electric marks a significant shift in EV affordability in India. By lowering the initial purchase cost and offering flexible ownership options, Hyundai is addressing a key barrier to EV adoption. This move could accelerate electric mobility uptake while setting a new benchmark for customer-centric innovation in the segment.
