Delhi's High-Tech Drive Towards Safer Roads: AI Cameras to Crack Down on Traffic Violations

In a groundbreaking move, the Delhi government is set to revolutionize its approach to road safety by investing ₹20 crore in the installation of artificial intelligence-powered cameras all across the city. These cameras, equipped with Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology, aim to detect and penalize traffic rule violations, fostering safer roads for both pedestrians and motorists.

Delhi's Tech-Infused Traffic Transformation

The Delhi government's transport department is leading this initiative to deploy an Integrated Traffic Enforcement Management System (ITMS) throughout the capital. This advanced system leverages AI-based video analytics to restrain traffic violations such as triple riding, mobile phone usage while driving, and vehicles without a valid Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC).

ANPR Technology

The heart of the ITMS lies in its ANPR technology, capable of identifying license plates all across the vehicle categories, including the cars, heavy commercial vehicles, three-wheelers, two-wheelers, and buses. The system categorizes licence plates as 'good,' 'bad/dilapidated,' or 'broken' and employs image processing algorithms with a minimum detection accuracy of 95% and conversion accuracy of 90%.

The Delhi government has identified key traffic violations, including speed infractions, helmetless riding, triple riding, seat belt negligence, mobile phone usage, uncovered goods carriage, and overloading in commercial vehicles.
