Indofast Energy and Hala Mobility have expanded their battery-swapping partnership to 15,000 electric vehicles within a year. The companies aim to reach 40,000 vehicles by March 2027, targeting India's growing last-mile delivery sector. They announced the expanded partnership on Tuesday, focusing on electrifying last-mile delivery and gig-economy fleets across major Indian cities.
Key Highlights
- Indofast and Hala have scaled battery swapping to 15,000 EVs in one year.
- Partnership targets 40,000 vehicles by March 2027 and 100,000 by March 2028.
- Battery swapping can reduce running costs by up to 40 percent for delivery riders.
- Indofast operates more than 1,900 swap stations, supporting 120,000 vehicles across 24 cities.
Expansion Plans and Deployment Targets
Indofast Energy, a battery-swapping solutions provider, and Hala Mobility, an EV-as-a-service platform, have rapidly scaled their collaboration. Their operations currently cover Hyderabad, Bengaluru, Delhi NCR, and Mumbai. Under the new agreement, they plan to deploy a total of 40,000 electric vehicles by March 2027 and 100,000 vehicles by March 2028. The companies will expand into Pune, Chennai, and Jaipur, in addition to their existing cities.
The battery-swapping model uses Indofast's infrastructure and Hala Mobility's fleet management. Riders can exchange depleted batteries for charged ones in about two minutes. This process eliminates the need to wait for vehicle charging and increases fleet uptime.
Cost and Environmental Impact
The companies state that battery swapping can reduce running costs by up to 40 percent compared to petrol vehicles. This benefit is significant for delivery riders who travel 80 to 100 kilometres daily. Rajat Malhan, Chief Business Officer at Indofast Energy, said the rapid adoption shows battery swapping is preferred for fleet operators focused on cost and uptime. The companies plan to build an integrated ecosystem to support commercial electric vehicle adoption.
Srikanth Reddy, founder of Hala Mobility, said the partnership aims to provide delivery riders with reliable access to charged batteries and higher daily earnings. He noted that reaching 15,000 vehicles demonstrates the model's potential to support a broader EV ecosystem in India.
Network and Operations
Indofast Energy operates more than 1,900 swap stations in 24 cities. This network supports over 120,000 vehicles and has enabled more than 2 billion kilometres of electric mobility. The company reports that its operations have helped avoid over 97,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Indofast Energy is a joint venture between Indian Oil Corporation Limited and SUN Mobility. Hala Mobility describes itself as an e-mobility aggregator platform. It uses generative AI to connect fleet operators and riders with electric vehicle access, charging, and service networks.
