On September 13, 2024, Ford officially announced its intention to repurpose its Chennai plant in India for manufacturing vehicles focused on export markets. This strategic decision aligns with the automaker's Ford+ growth plan. A Letter of Intent (LoI) was submitted to the Tamil Nadu Government after discussions between Ford leadership and the state's Chief Minister during his visit to the United States.
Ford's Re-entry in India
The repurposed Chennai facility will focus on manufacturing vehicles aimed at global markets. While specific details of the production activities are yet to be revealed, this move demonstrates Ford’s intention to leverage the strong manufacturing expertise in Tamil Nadu to boost its international presence.
Kay Hart, President of Ford International Markets Group, expressed appreciation for the Tamil Nadu Government's support, stating, "We are grateful for the ongoing support from the Tamil Nadu Government as we explored different options for the Chennai plant. This step aims to underscore our ongoing commitment to India as we intend to leverage the manufacturing expertise available in Tamil Nadu to serve new global markets."
Job Creation and Future Expansion
Ford’s initiative is expected to generate significant employment in Tamil Nadu. The automaker currently employs around 12,000 individuals in its Global Business Operations in the state. Over the next three years, the repurposed facility is projected to create an additional 2,500 to 3,000 jobs.
This expansion will further solidify India’s position as an important part of Ford's global operations, as the country already houses Ford’s second-largest salaried workforce due to its engine manufacturing operations in Sanand.
Further details regarding the repurposing of the Chennai plant will be shared in due course, showcasing Ford’s continued commitment to investing in India’s manufacturing capabilities.
