Hyundai files patent in India for production spec boulder off-road SUV

Hyundai has filed a patent in India for a model resembling the production version of the Boulder off-road SUV concept. This move signals Hyundai’s intention to expand its SUV offerings in India, following the Boulder’s global debut at the 2026 New York International Auto Show. The Boulder concept introduced Hyundai’s first body-on-frame architecture for a pickup truck, with plans for a US market launch by 2030.

Patent Design Details

The patent images show a vehicle closely mirroring the Boulder concept’s boxy and rugged proportions. Key features include chunky off-road tyres, muscular cladding, squared-off fenders, and distinctive L-shaped C-pillars. However, the patent reveals several changes from the concept, especially at the front. The dual-headlamp clusters seen on the concept have been replaced by two smaller square lights, each flanked by vertical LED strips. The grille design is also different, with the patent showing a cleaner, more closed-off grille instead of the slotted version on the concept.

The front bumper in the patent image features a more defined skid plate with multiple small rectangular slats. On the sides, the wheel-arch cladding is squared-off, unlike the rounded design on the concept. The wheels themselves have a new design. The roof-mounted light bar from the concept is absent in the patent, replaced by a large roof rack with limb risers extending toward the front fenders. These cables help protect the windscreen from tree branches in dense terrain. The windows are less rounded, and the small glass panels above them have been removed.

Interior and Rear Features

The patent does not provide images of the rear or the interior. The Boulder concept’s rear features a bootlid-mounted spare wheel and dual tail-lamp clusters, but it is unclear if these will carry over to the production model. Inside the concept, the dashboard includes four rotary knobs for adjusting four-wheel drive and off-road modes, with an inclinometer between them. Above the knobs, four rectangular screens are arranged in a row, and a heads-up display spans the dashboard’s width. The dashboard also contains large storage cubbies illuminated by orange ambient lighting. The steering wheel is a three-spoke, flat-bottomed unit with a floating central hub and additional rotary knobs. The gear lever’s linkages are exposed, contributing to a rugged, functional cabin design.

Hyundai’s India SUV Plans

Hyundai confirmed during its 2025 Investors Day that it will introduce an off-road-focused SUV to its India line-up before FY2030. This announcement supports the possibility that the production-spec Boulder could launch in India as an SUV. The patent filing indicates Hyundai’s commitment to expanding its SUV portfolio in the Indian market, aligning with its global strategy for off-road vehicles.
