India auto industry records strong May sales growth amid clean fuel push and new investments

Major Sales and Production Updates

Maruti Suzuki led the week’s headlines, preparing to ramp up production by 22% year-on-year in FY27. The company targets manufacturing 2.82 million vehicles, with plans for nine new products, including seven SUVs. Maruti Suzuki also launched India’s first flex-fuel passenger vehicle, the Wagon R Flex Fuel, and announced a Rs 925 crore investment in green energy by FY31.

May 2026 saw robust sales across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, commercial vehicles, and tractors. Maruti Suzuki posted record monthly sales of 242,688 units, including 193,535 units in the domestic market. Hero MotoCorp reported a 12.3% increase in dispatches to 570,068 units, supported by strong domestic demand and export recovery. Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle sales rose 17% to 32,850 units, with domestic sales up 19% to 30,784 units. Mahindra & Mahindra’s Farm Equipment Business reported 49,695 tractor sales, a 22% year-on-year increase.

Electric passenger vehicle registrations reached 26,319 units in May, a 79% rise year-on-year. EV penetration increased to 6.4% of total passenger vehicle registrations, up from 5.9% in April. In the first two months of the fiscal year, electric passenger vehicle registrations climbed 77% to 52,274 units.

Policy Actions and Clean Fuel Initiatives

The government advanced clean-fuel policies by launching high-ethanol fuel retailing at 48 petrol pumps nationwide. The initiative aims to expand to 500 outlets by December 2026 and 5,000 by December 2027. The national ethanol blending average is targeted to reach nearly 26% by the 2030-31 fiscal year. E85 fuel is priced Rs 20 lower than E20 gasoline.

A Rs 9,585 crore scheme was announced to phase out older trucks and buses in Delhi-NCR. Of this, Rs 5,041 crore will come from the central government, with Rs 1,601 crore in tax concessions from state governments. The scheme supports the replacement of older vehicles with cleaner BS-VI or electric models.

Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director Hisashi Takeuchi emphasized the need for multiple technologies to address India’s clean mobility challenge. Hero MotoCorp launched flex-fuel versions of its Splendor and HF Deluxe motorcycles and plans to expand flex-fuel technology across its lineup.

Industry Strategies and Investments

Mahindra & Mahindra outlined a new supplier strategy focused on supply-chain resilience, faster development, automation, and technology. TVS Motor Company engaged Lippincott to revamp its premium brand and is developing a new 160cc liquid-cooled maxi-scooter to enter the premium scooter segment.

Honda Cars India is planning a strategic reset with India-specific SUVs, localized hybrid technology, and mainstream EVs. Lubrizol expects India’s share of its global business to double in six to eight years, driven by mobility and infrastructure growth. Tyre makers face strong demand but rising input costs due to global volatility. Continental Tyres India highlighted India’s importance as a growth market, introducing new products like the CrossContact AT2.

Electric and Alternative Fuel Developments

Prime Minister’s Office advisor Tarun Kapoor indicated a larger support program for electric trucks is in preparation. Electric bus adoption could reach 50% and trucks 35% by 2035, according to industry leaders. Companies like JBM and Olectra are expanding their electric bus operations, while Ultra Gas & Energy is working to scale LNG refueling infrastructure for long-haul freight.

Ola Electric raised Rs 780 crore through an oversubscribed qualified institutional placement, signaling renewed institutional confidence. Simple Energy closed a Rs 250 crore Series B round. River Mobility, an EV startup, is scaling up with a focus on profitability and partnerships, including with Yamaha.
