18 | Toyota | MUV | Innova + Hycross | 8,449 | 8,481 | 0% |
19 | Mahindra | SUV | XUV 3X0 | 7,861 | 4,218 | 86% |
20 | Kia | SUV | Sonet | 7,598 | 9,102 | -17% |
21 | Mahindra | SUV | XUV 700 | 7,468 | 6,546 | 14% |

24 | Kia | SUV | Syros | 5,425 | 0 | 0% |
25 | Hyundai | SUV | Exter | 5,361 | 7,582 | -29% |
Maruti’s Fronx compact SUV crushed it, selling 21,461 units – a whopping 51% jump from last February. It wasn’t alone. Seven of the top 10 bestsellers were SUVs, including Hyundai’s Creta (16,317 units, up 7%) and Tata’s Nexon (15,349 units, up 7%). Even Mahindra made noise: the rugged Thar surged 59% (9,248 units), while the XUV 3XO exploded with 86% growth (7,861 units), making it February’s fastest climber.
Maruti’s Mixed Bag
Though still dominant, Maruti saw cracks in its armor. The trusty Wagon R hatchback held strong at #2 (19,879 units, up 2%), and models like the Brezza SUV and Ertiga van kept it ahead with six top-10 spots. But the Baleno hatchback slipped 12%, and the once-popular Alto plummeted 27% – proof buyers are ditching basic cars for feature-packed rides.
Shakeups & Surprises
Hyundai’s Creta stayed steady, but its Exter mini-SUV nosedived 29%. Tata’s Punch compact SUV also took a hit (-21%), while Kia had a split month: the Sonet dipped 17%, but the Seltos inched up 3%. Kia’s new Syros MPV, however, impressed right out of the gate with 5,425 sales.
What’s Driving the Market?
SUVs aren’t slowing down – buyers love their style and practicality. Maruti’s still king by playing all sides (hatchbacks, SUVs, vans), and workhorses like the Eeco van and Mahindra’s Bolero (despite a 14% drop) show rural demand remains steady. One gap? Electric cars. No EVs cracked the top 25, hinting India’s shift to green rides needs a jumpstart.
Bottom Line
February confirmed two truths: India’s obsessed with SUVs, and Maruti’s not giving up its throne easily. But with fresh models like the Syros and revamped SUVs heating up the competition, 2024’s sales battles could get wild.
