KTM 390 Adventure R Apart?

The KTM 390 Adventure R is designed for riders seeking stronger off-road performance without aftermarket modifications. While it shares its core platform and engine with the standard 390 Adventure, the R version receives significant upgrades to its suspension, wheels, and overall stance. That said, the biggest highlight in the 390 Adventure R is the high-spec WP Apex suspension, 230mm of wheel travel at both the front and rear, which is a noticeable upgrade over the standard model. This setup allows the bike to better handle rocks, ruts, and uneven trails while offering improved damping control. Moreover the suspension hardware is similar to what KTM uses on its globally sold Enduro-focused models.
Taller Stance, More Ground Clearance
The longer suspension has resulted in increased dimensions, clearly signaling the bike’s hardcore intent.
Key Dimensions:
- Seat Height – 870 mm
- Ground clearance – 272 mm
- Wheel travel (F/R) – 230mm/ 230 mm
With this height, the Adventure R is best suited for experienced riders who are comfortable handling tall motorcycles, especially in challenging terrain.
Familiar Engine
Powering the Adventure R is the similar 398cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine, also seen on other KTM 390 models.

Engine highlights:
- Power: 46 PS
- Torque: 39 Nm
- Gearbox: 6-speed
- Features: Slipper clutch and bi-directional quickshifter
This engine is known for its strong mid-range performance, where it delivers quick and responsive acceleration between everyday riding speeds.
Features and Equipment

On the feature front the 390 Adventure R continues to carry the same package offered with the standard 390 Adventure, though the R variant lacks a few comfort-focused features to keep costs in check.
What it gets | What is misses |
Ride-by-wire throttle | Cruise Control |
Advance rider aids | Standard turn-by-turn navigation (optional) |
Adjustable WP suspension | |
Lightweight trellis frame |
Pricing Advantage
Despite its upgraded hardware, the KTM 390 Adventure R is priced lower than the standard spoked-wheel 390 Adventure. The 390 Adventure R is priced at Rs 3,77,915(ex-show) and the 390 Adventure (spoke wheels) comes at a price of Rs 3,96,744(ex-show). However, the lower price is mainly due to fewer touring-focused features and the use of tube-type tyres.

Verdict
The KTM 390 Adventure R stands out as the most off-road-capable 390 Adventure ever sold in India. By offering advanced suspension, proper dirt-focused wheels, and a lower price than the standard spoked variant, KTM has created a compelling option for enthusiasts who want to explore beyond paved roads. For riders planning serious trail riding or challenging routes such as Leh–Ladakh, the Adventure R presents a strong value proposition provided they’re ready to handle its height and off-road-focused nature.
