Mahindra’s Chakan plant rolls out three millionth vehicle as BE 6 marks a new milestone

Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd. has reached a major production milestone at its Chakan manufacturing facility in Maharashtra, rolling out its three-millionth vehicle from the plant. The milestone vehicle is the BE 6, Mahindra’s flagship electric SUV, underscoring how the company’s integrated manufacturing hub has evolved into a high-volume, future-ready base for both ICE and electric mobility.

The achievement also highlights the pace of Mahindra’s growth at Chakan, where the latest one million vehicles were produced in just 27 months. Since the first vehicle rolled out in December 2009, the facility has become one of the company’s most important manufacturing centres, combining scale, flexibility and technology to support domestic demand and exports.

Chakan’s Growth Story

ahindra said the plant crossed the three-million mark with the BE 6, reflecting the shift in its product strategy toward advanced electric mobility. The company noted that the facility’s first million vehicles took 107 months, while the latest million came nearly four times faster, showing how manufacturing throughput has accelerated over time.

R. Velusamy, President, Automotive Business, Mahindra & Mahindra Ltd., described the rollout as a proud moment in Mahindra’s manufacturing journey. He said the faster pace of production reflects customer trust and the commitment of the company’s people, partners and suppliers.

A Flexible Manufacturing Hub

Spread across 657 acres, the Chakan facility manufactures 19 models and more than 450 variants across passenger vehicles, electric vehicles and commercial vehicles. The plant is built around flexible multi-model manufacturing, supported by seven assembly lines and autonomous mobile robots that help move materials efficiently across the shop floor.

The facility also uses Industry 4.0 systems, artificial intelligence, IoT, 5G connectivity and digital traceability to improve quality and operational control. Around 1,500 robots are deployed at the plant, with more than 98% automation in the body shop, alongside robotic painting and sealer application.

Quality controls are built into the process through 3D component scanning, real-time weld integrity monitoring and No Fault Forward gateways. These systems are designed to catch issues early and support consistent output at scale, which matters even more as Mahindra balances ICE and EV production under one roof.

Sustainability And Exports

Chakan is not only about volume; it is also being positioned as a responsible manufacturing site. More than 50% of the plant’s energy requirement comes from renewable sources, while EV manufacturing at the facility runs on 100% renewable energy.

The plant is also water positive and certified as Zero Waste to Landfill. Mahindra says the facility returns the equivalent of 131% of the water it uses back to nature, supported by annual rainwater recharge of about 9.91 lakh kilolitres.

Exports are another key part of the story. Nearly all vehicle models built at Chakan support Mahindra’s international business, with shipments reaching markets such as South Africa, Australia and New Zealand.
