Maruti Suzuki India is set for the launch of its first electric vehicle (EV), the Concept eVX SUV, in January 2025. As part of its efforts to support EV adoption, the company has ambitious plans to establish around 25,000 EV charging points across India. In collaboration with oil marketing and energy companies, Maruti aims to create a comprehensive charging infrastructure, addressing one of the major challenges to EV adoption in the country.
Charging Infrastructure Expansion
In preparation for the launch of the Concept eVX, a midsize electric SUV, Maruti Suzuki intends to set up close to 25,000 EV charging points. Sources familiar with the company’s strategy revealed that the automaker plans to leverage its existing network of over 5,100 service centres located in 2,300 cities. By installing dedicated charging bays at these centres, Maruti aims to support EV owners nationwide.
Collaboration with Oil and Energy Companies
To further enhance its charging infrastructure, Maruti Suzuki is in discussions with oil marketing companies (OMCs) and energy firms. These collaborations aim to establish EV charging stations at retail outlets run by major OMCs such as Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum, which collectively operate more than 81,000 outlets across India.
A senior official from a state-run OMC confirmed that discussions are underway: "Maruti has reached out to us, and the terms and conditions are still under negotiation."
Dealer Preparation and Training
Maruti has already begun surveying its dealer workshops to identify suitable locations for installing charging points. The plan includes setting up at least one dedicated bay and two charging points at each service center. In addition, the company has started training its service mechanics to handle EV-related maintenance, with initial training sessions already conducted in Bengaluru.
Conclusion
Maruti Suzuki's efforts to build a robust charging infrastructure underscore its commitment to supporting the growth of electric mobility in India. By partnering with oil marketing companies and upgrading its extensive network of service centers, the automaker aims to address the challenges that hinder the widespread adoption of EVs in the country. The launch of the Concept eVX in 2025 marks a significant step towards Maruti's entry into the electric vehicle market.
