This small hybrid configuration complements its predecessor's modified 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (which itself provides 613 hp and 750 Nm) and provides an additional 12 hp and 200 Nm on request.
The new engine was introduced to improve the SUV's average performance, with both cars accelerating from 80 to 121 km/h in 3.2 seconds in four gears.
The top speed is limited to 250 km/h but can be increased to 290 km/h as part of the optional M Driving Package. The new power is sent back to all four wheels via BMW's M Steptronic eight-speed transmission, although both wheels are rear-weighted.
They continue with the Active M differential and Adaptive M rear suspension, now available on models with adjustable dampers.
