BMW X5 clearly emerges as the quintessential luxury SUV for the discerning buyer. The silky-smooth 3.0-litre straight-six engines, paired with the 48V mild-hybrid system, deliver an explosive yet refined performance, making overtakes effortless. While its sheer size and slightly stiff low-speed ride over broken patches might require some getting used to, the unparalleled high-speed stability and razor-sharp handling completely compensate. The lavish cabin, dominated by the brilliant Curved Display, screams opulence and guarantees supreme comfort for long family road trips. If you want a commanding, feature-loaded, and driver-focused machine that perfectly balances everyday practicality with sheer driving pleasure, the BMW X5 completely justifies its premium price tag.

  • Powerful BMW X5 inline-6 engine performance
  • Refined ride quality with air suspension option
  • Premium interior quality and advanced infotainment
  • Strong road presence with iconic BMW design
  • Excellent balance of luxury and performance

thumb-downWhat could have been better?

  • Petrol-only powertrain option in India
  • Large dimensions can be challenging in tight urban areas
  • Fuel efficiency lower compared to smaller luxury SUVs

Introduction

BMW X5 sits among BMW’s most accomplished SUV offerings. It shares the luxury spotlight with the X3 below and the X7 above. Its athletic stance and muscular proportions signal serious intent from every angle. The design blends sporty on-road aggression with premium cabin refinement. This is the SUV that redefined the luxury crossover segment back in 1999. Four generations later, it remains the benchmark others chase. The X5 cares more about the drive than the destination. It would rather carve a mountain road than sit pretty in a parking lot.

Performance: Quick, capable, and unmistakably BMW

How does it drive? Most luxury SUVs this size feel detached from the road. Not the X5. It drives like a proper sports sedan wearing an SUV body. The 8-speed Steptronic automatic gearbox shifts with precision and near-telepathic smoothness. Braking feels confident in city traffic and highway off-ramp situations alike. The 3.0-litre TwinPower Turbo inline-six petrol engine produces 375 bhp and 520 Nm. It handles highway overtakes and city commutes with equal swagger. The 3.0-litre turbo diesel pushes out 282 bhp and a massive 650 Nm. That wall of low-end torque makes hill climbs and long-haul cruising effortless. Both engines come with mild-hybrid assistance that adds an extra 12 bhp and 200 Nm for seamless electric boost.

The BMW X5 weighs around 1,790 kg in its base configuration. Larger 21-inch alloy wheels on M Sport trims add firmness over broken Indian roads and potholes. On standard suspension, the ride stays composed and well-sorted overall. Adaptive air suspension, available on higher variants, softens bumps beautifully. It also adjusts ground clearance by up to 40 mm for varied terrain situations.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive system works seamlessly across all variants and conditions. The surround-view 3D camera system helps in tight parking spots and crowded lanes. Large windows and well-sized mirrors give excellent outward visibility everywhere. Navigating Delhi traffic or Rajasthan highway stretches feels equally manageable.

Comfort: A quiet, roomy cabin with luxury touches

How comfortable is it? The X5 rides with the refinement you expect at this price. The cabin stays remarkably quiet, even on rough surfaces and at highway speeds. Road noise and wind noise remain well-controlled throughout most driving situations.

The driver’s seat offers a wide range of electric adjustments with memory function. The second row feels genuinely spacious and well-cushioned for three adults. Headroom, legroom, and shoulder room remain plentiful for tall passengers. The panoramic sunroof and large glass area create a bright, open cabin feel. Air suspension lowers the ride height for easy entry and exit on higher variants. Large doors and a sensible step-in height make access convenient for all passengers. The four-zone automatic climate control with ioniser keeps every row independently comfortable. An optional sports seat package adds better bolstering for spirited driving without sacrificing comfort.

Child seat installation in the second row is straightforward and easy with ISOFIX mounts. The rear seat could offer slightly more under-thigh support for longer journeys, though. Some rivals like the Mercedes-Benz GLE offer a more reclined rear seat angle. The multi-colour ambient lighting adds a premium touch to the cabin after dark.

In-Cabin Tech

How’s the tech? The BMW Curved Display looks stunning with its seamless glass panel design. It houses a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The iDrive 8.5 system responds quickly and feels free of annoying lag issues. However, the touchscreen-heavy interface can feel complicated and sometimes frustrating. Finding specific settings requires too many taps and swipes occasionally. Physical shortcut buttons would be a welcome addition for frequent functions. The Harman Kardon surround sound system delivers rich, detailed audio quality throughout the cabin.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, a welcome convenience feature. The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant responds to voice commands with decent accuracy. Phone connectivity works reliably, though the occasional Bluetooth dropout does happen. More rear USB charging ports would be a welcome addition for families. BMW’s Remote Software Upgrades arrive over-the-air to improve features over time.

Storage & Cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The BMW X5 offers 645 litres of boot space with seats up. Fold the 40/20/40 split second row down, and you get up to 1,870 litres. The rear seats fold with a simple lever mechanism and lie reasonably flat. Air suspension can lower the vehicle for easier cargo loading at the tailgate. The X5 uses a conventional power-operated liftgate, which opens effortlessly at the press of a button. A foot-activated gesture control for the tailgate is available for hands-full situations. Interior cubby holes and door bins are generous and well-shaped for everyday items. Rear passenger storage options work well for bottles, phones, and small bags.

The X5’s towing capacity reaches up to 3,265 kg (7,200 lbs) when properly equipped. That figure matches or beats most luxury SUV rivals available in the Indian market. The 80-litre fuel tank ensures comfortable highway runs between refuelling stops.

Value: A premium all-rounder with sport and luxury in equal measure

Is it a good value? The BMW X5 starts at around ₹95.40 lakh (ex-showroom) in India. Prices go up to around ₹1.10 crore for the range-topping xDrive30d M Sport Pro variant. The main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLE, starts at around ₹98 lakh. A sensibly specced X5 xDrive40i xLine blends driving thrills with everyday luxury beautifully. It justifies its premium over simpler options like the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 easily. The body structure feels rock-solid and impeccably assembled from every angle. Panel gaps are tight and consistent, as you’d expect at this price. It sits level with a Mercedes-Benz GLE in outright luxury feel. But it offers a sharper, more engaging driving experience than most luxury SUV rivals.

BMW India offers a standard warranty of two years with unlimited kilometres. Extended warranty packages are available through authorised BMW service centres. Some competitors like Volvo include complimentary service packages, but BMW does not as standard.

Mileage: Expect modest fuel efficiency numbers

How’s the fuel economy? The 3.0-litre turbo petrol returns an ARAI-rated mileage of around 12 kmpl. The 3.0-litre turbo diesel delivers roughly 12 kmpl as per ARAI figures as well. Real-world mileage typically falls below these official ARAI-certified numbers. City driving with frequent stops brings the figures down to around 7–9 kmpl. The mild-hybrid assist helps recover some energy during braking and coasting. The diesel engine remains the more frugal choice for everyday Indian driving. It balances performance and fuel costs better than the petrol option, especially for long-distance commuters.

X Factor

Personality matters a lot to the X5, and it delivers in spades. This generation nails the athletic, muscular proportions BMW SUVs are known for. It looks imposing and handsome from nearly every angle on Indian roads. The illuminated kidney grille with Iconic Glow adds genuine road presence at night. The arrow-shaped LED DRLs and X-pattern taillights give it a modern, distinctive face. The X5 drives with composure and confidence on highways, city streets, and broken roads alike. Its xDrive system handles wet roads and loose gravel with reassuring stability. The driving modes – Comfort, Sport, and Eco Pro – genuinely change the car’s character with each selection. Enthusiasts will love the sharp steering and composed body control through corners. Still, the X5’s ability to feel like a driver’s car in a full-size SUV body is hard to beat.

The Definitive Everyday Luxury Cruiser for Automotive Purists

05-Jun-26 | By Vikram Rathore
This SUV continues to confidently defend its turf as the definitive luxury all-rounder by pairing an engaging rear-biased drivetrain with exceptional utilitarian capability. The automatic gearbox is psychic in its gear selection, executing lightning-fast downshifts the moment you demand power for an overtake. While routine maintenance costs reflect the high-end European heritage and require deep pockets over the long term, the sheer emotional reward of driving a machine engineered with such high mechanical integrity makes it an incredibly satisfying asset to own.

Bespoke Materials and Unrivaled High-Speed Highway Stability

16-May-26 | By Priya Goel
The interior execution feels like a bespoke lounge, particularly when the ambient lighting bathes the glass-accented controls and panoramic sunroof in a customized evening hue. On extended highway stretches, the acoustic insulation isolates the cabin from wind and tire roar with spectacular efficiency, maintaining an ultra-quiet atmosphere at triple-digit speeds. The braking performance is equally confidence-inspiring, hauling the substantial mass down to a dead stop with a firm, progressive pedal feel that speaks volumes about its underlying safety engineering.

A Bold Aesthetic Refresh Rooted in Pure Mechanical Integrity

25-Apr-26 | By Deepak Nair
The updated styling revisions, highlighted by the arrow-shaped daytime running lights and the subtly glowing Iconic Glow kidney grille, grant the vehicle a deeply compelling modern edge. Under the skin, the mild-hybrid system integrates flawlessly with the transmission, providing an extra burst of low-end electric assistance that smoothens out the stop-and-go experience significantly. While the ride quality errs slightly on the firmer, Euro-centric side over jagged broken tarmac, it pays massive dividends by keeping body roll tightly controlled through aggressive corners.
