Introduction
BMW X7 sits at the pinnacle of BMW’s SUV lineup. It shares the luxury spotlight with the X5 and the flagship iX. Its imposing, stretched silhouette borrows design DNA from the 7 Series sedan. The design blends boulevard-cruiser elegance with genuine seven-seat practicality. This is the BMW that turns heads at five-star hotel porticos. It has a road presence that rivals even the Range Rover and Mercedes-Benz GLS. The X7 cares more about cosseting its occupants in absolute comfort. It would rather glide down the expressway than chase lap times on a circuit.
Performance: Powerful, poised, and unmistakably BMW
How does it drive? Large luxury SUVs usually sacrifice driver engagement for comfort. Not the X7. It drives with a sharpness and precision that reminds you this is, after all, a BMW. The 8-speed Steptronic Sport automatic gearbox shifts with seamless, almost telepathic accuracy. Braking feels progressive and confidence-inspiring in city traffic and stop-and-go crawls. The 3.0-litre turbo-petrol inline-six produces 375 PS and 520 Nm. It handles highway overtakes and city commutes with effortless authority. The 3.0-litre mild-hybrid diesel pushes out 335 PS and a mighty 700 Nm. That massive low-end torque makes hill climbs, towing, and high-speed cruising completely stress-free. Both engines come paired with 48V mild-hybrid technology, adding 12 PS and 200 Nm for smoother power delivery.
The BMW X7 weighs around 2,460 kg in the diesel variant. The standard 21-inch M alloy wheels add a touch of firmness over broken Indian roads and potholes. On the standard adaptive two-axle air suspension, the ride stays composed and remarkably well-mannered. The air suspension adjusts ride height automatically, softening bumps beautifully on rough surfaces. Ground clearance sits at around 221 mm, which is adequate for Indian road conditions.
The xDrive all-wheel-drive system distributes torque intelligently across all four wheels. The 360-degree surround-view camera system helps in tight parking spots and narrow lanes. Large windows and well-sized mirrors give excellent outward visibility everywhere. Navigating Mumbai traffic or Rajasthan highway stretches feels equally manageable. Eco Pro, Comfort, Sport, and Adaptive driving modes let you tailor the experience. The M Sport brakes deliver reassuring stopping power even at triple-digit speeds.
Comfort: A hushed, spacious cabin built for long journeys
How comfortable is it? The X7 rides with the refinement you expect from a flagship BMW SUV. The cabin stays remarkably quiet, even on rough surfaces and at triple-digit speeds. Road noise and wind noise remain exceptionally well-controlled throughout most driving situations.
The driver’s seat offers a wide range of electric adjustments, along with heating and ventilation. The second row feels genuinely spacious and luxurious with individual captain seats on the six-seater layout. Headroom, legroom, and shoulder room remain plentiful for tall passengers across the first two rows. The tall roofline and the panoramic Sky Lounge glass roof create a bright, airy cabin feel. Air suspension lowers the ride height for easy entry and exit. Large doors and a flat floor make access convenient for all three rows. Getting into the third row remains a bit of a squeeze for larger adults, though. We recommend the six-seat configuration over the seven-seater for everyday luxury. It offers better individual comfort without compromising second-row space.
Child seat installation in the second row is straightforward with ISOFIX mounts. The third row works well enough for children and smaller passengers on shorter trips. The five-zone automatic climate control ensures every row stays perfectly comfortable. Ventilated and heated front seats add to the all-weather luxury experience.
In-Cabin Tech
How’s the tech? The BMW Live Cockpit Professional features a 14.9-inch curved touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster. The displays look sharp with crisp graphics and a clean layout. The touchscreen responds quickly and feels free of annoying lag issues. However, BMW’s iDrive OS 8.0 menu structure can feel layered and sometimes overwhelming. Finding specific settings requires more taps and swipes than we would prefer. Gesture control adds a novelty touch, but its real-world usefulness is debatable. The Harman Kardon 464-watt surround sound system with 16 speakers delivers rich, immersive audio throughout the cabin.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, which is convenient and seamless. Wireless smartphone charging is standard and works without fuss. BMW’s Intelligent Personal Assistant responds to voice commands for navigation, climate, and media. The head-up display projects key driving information onto the windshield crisply. Over-the-air software updates keep the system fresh and improved over time. The ambient lighting package with over 15 pre-defined light designs adds a lovely visual touch.
Storage & Cargo
How’s storage and cargo? The BMW X7 offers around 326 litres of boot space with all three rows in place. Fold the third row down, and you get approximately 750 litres. Fold the second row as well, and the cargo area expands significantly for larger loads. The third-row seats fold electrically at the touch of a button, which is a welcome convenience. The split tailgate opens in two sections, offering flexible access to the boot area. The soft-close function on all doors adds a premium, hushed feel to everyday use.
Interior cubby holes and door pockets work for everyday items but could be deeper. Rear passenger storage options are adequate but not class-leading for a car this size. The X7’s towing capacity reaches up to 3,500 kg when properly equipped. That matches most full-size luxury SUV rivals available in the market. The 80–83-litre fuel tank, depending on variant, ensures long highway runs between refuelling stops.
Value: A flagship SUV loaded with luxury and tech
Is it a good value? The BMW X7 starts at around ₹1.26 crore (ex-showroom) in India. Prices go up to approximately ₹1.33 crore for the range-topping M Sport Pro diesel variant. The main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLS, starts at around ₹1.28 crore. A sensibly specced X7 xDrive40d blends highway refinement with genuine seven-seat practicality. It justifies its premium over simpler options like the Volvo XC90 comfortably. The CLAR platform underpinning the X7 feels rock-solid and confidence-inspiring from every angle. Panel gaps are tight and consistent, and the build quality meets the expectations set by the price tag. It trades blows with the GLS in outright luxury feel, each excelling in different areas. But the X7 offers a more driver-focused experience than most luxury SUV rivals.
BMW India offers a standard warranty of two years with unlimited kilometres. Extended warranty and Repair Inclusive packages are available for up to five to ten years. The 12-year anti-rust perforation warranty adds long-term confidence in the body structure. Some competitors like Mercedes-Benz offer three-year standard warranties, which gives them a slight edge here.
Mileage: Expect modest fuel efficiency numbers
How’s the fuel economy? The 3.0-litre turbo-petrol returns an ARAI-rated mileage of around 11.29 kmpl. The 3.0-litre diesel delivers roughly 14.31 kmpl as per ARAI figures. Real-world mileage typically falls below these official ARAI-certified numbers. City driving with frequent stops brings the figures down further, especially with the petrol. The 48V mild-hybrid system helps recover some energy during deceleration. The diesel engine remains the most practical choice for everyday Indian driving. It balances performance and fuel costs better than the petrol option across all conditions.
X Factor
Presence matters a lot to the X7, and it delivers in abundance. The facelifted design features a bold, split-headlamp look that divides opinion sharply. The massive illuminated kidney grille with BMW Iconic Glow leaves no one indifferent. It looks imposing and commanding from nearly every angle on Indian roads. The Crystal headlights with Swarovski elements add a jewel-like quality up front. The rear end, with its sleek connected tail lamps and dual exhausts, looks sophisticated and athletic. Flush door handles, muscular wheel arches, and 21-inch M alloys complete the premium picture. The M Sport package adds aggressive bumper cuts and sporty details that sharpen the stance. Inside, the Crafted Clarity glass elements on the gear selector, iDrive controller, and start/stop button feel genuinely special. The Merino leather trim, Alcantara headliner, and ambient lighting create an interior that rivals first-class air travel. The panoramic Sky Lounge roof with over 15,000 lighting elements transforms the cabin at night. Still, some might find the illuminated grille and crystal elements a touch too flashy for a BMW. But the X7’s effortless blend of luxury, technology, and driving pleasure is hard to beat in its segment.
