BMW has confirmed that the first Alpina models under its full ownership will be based on the BMW 7 Series and BMW X7. This announcement follows BMW’s complete acquisition of Alpina earlier this year, ending decades of independent operation for the tuning firm. The move brings Alpina’s development and positioning closer to BMW’s overall product strategy.
Key Highlights
- BMW confirms first Alpina models under its ownership will use 7 Series and X7 platforms
- Alpina vehicles will remain distinct from BMW M models, with focus on luxury and customization
- Future Alpina models may include electric variants as BMW remains open to new technologies
- Upcoming 7 Series and X7 updates will form the basis for next-generation Alpina cars
New Alpina Models Based on Flagship BMWs

Joachim Post, BMW Group R&D chief, told Autocar UK that the first new BMW Alpina vehicles will start with the BMW 7 Series and X7. Both models are scheduled for significant updates later this year. These updates will include design and technology changes that align with BMW’s Neue Klasse direction. The refreshed 7 Series and X7 will serve as the foundation for Alpina’s next-generation vehicles, allowing the brand to use BMW’s latest architecture while maintaining its unique identity.
BMW has not yet confirmed the specific powertrains for the upcoming Alpina models. However, the company indicated it remains open to various technologies. When asked about the possibility of electric Alpina models, Post stated that BMW is “technology-open.” The BMW X7 Series is already available with both internal combustion engines and electric powertrains, suggesting future Alpina models could also offer multiple options.
Alpina’s Distinct Identity to Continue
BMW has stated that Alpina will continue to follow its established approach to design and configuration. The brand will remain separate from BMW’s M division, with no overlap in target audience or purpose. Post emphasized that Alpina and M serve different roles within the BMW lineup. While BMW M models focus on performance inspired by motorsport, Alpina vehicles prioritize speed, luxury, comfort, and individualization.
This distinction has defined Alpina’s identity for years, and BMW intends to preserve it. Future Alpina cars are expected to deliver strong performance but will not adopt the aggressive characteristics typical of M models.
Instead, Alpina vehicles will emphasize extensive customization options, high-quality materials, and bespoke craftsmanship, consistent with the brand’s traditional approach. BMW has not yet released further details about the new Alpina models or the broader brand strategy. More information is expected as the updated 7 Series and X7 are launched later this year.

This move strengthens Alpina’s presence in the high-performance luxury segment while ensuring that the trademark craftsmanship, exclusivity, and refined performance of Alpina continue to define the brand’s legacy.
