Introduction
Land Rover Discovery Sport sits as JLR’s most versatile compact luxury SUV offering. It shares the family DNA with Discovery and Range Rover Evoque. Its clean, well-proportioned silhouette carries the Land Rover heritage with understated confidence. The design blends urban sophistication with genuine all-terrain capability. This is the Land Rover built for active families who want it all. It seats up to seven, tackles trails on the weekend, and still looks sharp on the school run. The Discovery Sport cares more about being genuinely useful every single day. It would rather nail a Himalayan highway drive than chase lap times on a circuit.
Performance: Peppy, planted, and easy to live with
How does it drive? Compact luxury SUVs often sacrifice driving engagement for comfort. Not with the Discovery Sport. It drives with a composure and balance that belies its seven-seat layout. The 9-speed automatic gearbox shifts smoothly and keeps the engine in its sweet spot. Braking feels confident and progressive in bumper-to-bumper city traffic. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine produces 245 bhp and 365 Nm of torque. It handles highway merges and city commutes with equal ease and refinement. The 2.0-litre Ingenium turbo-diesel pushes out 201 bhp and a whopping 430 Nm. That chunky low-end torque makes hill climbs and loaded family drives effortless.
The Discovery Sport tips the scales at around 1,830 kg in standard trim. Larger alloy wheels, available up to 21 inches, add firmness over broken Indian roads and potholes. On the standard suspension setup, the ride stays composed and settled overall. The suspension leans towards the stiffer side, which keeps body roll in check through corners. Ground clearance of 212 mm handles tall speed breakers and rough patches without drama.
Adaptive cruise control works smoothly on the highway without any jerky corrections. The 3D surround camera system helps in tight parking spots and narrow lanes. Large windows and a commanding seating position give excellent outward visibility everywhere. Navigating Delhi traffic or Manali mountain roads feels equally manageable.
Comfort: A spacious, versatile cabin with a premium feel
How comfortable is it? The Discovery Sport rides with a refinement that punches above its segment. The cabin stays reasonably quiet, even on rough surfaces and at highway speeds. Road noise and wind noise remain well-controlled throughout most driving situations.
The driver’s seat is large and extremely comfortable with generous lateral and under-thigh support. The second row feels genuinely spacious and versatile with a 40:20:40 split. The rear seats slide and recline individually, adding real everyday flexibility. Headroom, legroom, and shoulder room remain plentiful for three adults in the middle row. The tall roofline and large glass area create a bright, airy cabin feel. The driving position sits high and commanding, offering great all-round visibility. The panoramic glass roof floods the cabin with natural light and a sense of space.
Child seat installation in the second row is straightforward and easy with ISOFIX points. The third row exists, but it is practically unusable for adults. The seat base sits almost at floor level, leaving virtually no knee room for grown-ups. We recommend treating the Discovery Sport as a comfortable five-seater with occasional kid-friendly third-row use. The climate control now integrates third-row controls, a thoughtful addition for family drives.
In-Cabin Tech
How’s the tech? The 11.4-inch curved Pivi Pro infotainment system looks sharp with crisp graphics. The touchscreen responds quickly and feels largely free of frustrating lag issues. However, Land Rover has ditched physical buttons in favour of on-screen controls. This minimalist approach looks clean but can feel fiddly while driving. The permanent sidebars for media, volume, climate, and navigation help somewhat. But real-world usability is not as intuitive as physical knobs and buttons. The fully digital instrument cluster displays information clearly and looks modern. The ClearSight rearview mirror provides an unobstructed rear view through a camera feed. The Meridian audio system delivers rich, detailed sound quality throughout the cabin.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, which is a welcome convenience. Wireless phone charging keeps cables out of the way during daily commutes. USB-C ports are available in each row, covering rear passengers as well. JLR’s software updates arrive over-the-air to improve features and fix issues over time.
Storage & Cargo
How’s storage and cargo? The Discovery Sport offers around 541 litres of boot space with the third row folded flat. Fold the second row down, and you get up to roughly 1,794 litres of cargo room. With the third-row seats deployed, boot space shrinks drastically to around 115 litres. The rear seats slide forward individually, which cleverly frees up extra boot space when needed. The boot floor sits level when the third row is folded, creating a clean, usable loading area. There is no boot lip to lift luggage over, though the tall stance means you still load items at height.
The Discovery Sport’s towing capacity reaches up to 2,500 kg when properly equipped. That handles most caravan and boat-trailer duties competently for Indian road-trip needs. The 70-litre fuel tank ensures decent highway range between refuelling stops. A 12-volt power socket in the cargo area adds practical utility for longer journeys.
Mileage: Expect modest fuel efficiency numbers
How’s the fuel economy? The 2.0-litre diesel returns a claimed mileage of around 13 kmpl. The 2.0-litre petrol delivers roughly 11 kmpl as per available figures. Real-world mileage typically falls a few notches below these claimed numbers. City driving with frequent stops brings the figures down even further for both engines. The diesel engine remains the most practical choice for everyday Indian driving conditions. It balances performance and fuel costs better than the petrol option by a clear margin. The 70-litre fuel tank gives the diesel variant a theoretical range of around 900 kilometres.
X Factor
Versatility matters a lot to the Discovery Sport, and it delivers in spades. This generation nails the balance between compact dimensions and genuine seven-seat space. It looks well-proportioned and classy from every angle on Indian roads. The front end with its gloss black grille and redesigned LED headlamps looks sharp and modern. The contrasting roof option adds a sporty, premium touch to the overall design. The Discovery Sport drives with composure and confidence on highways and broken roads alike. Its all-wheel-drive system handles wet roads, gravel tracks, and mild trails with ease. Electronic controls make light off-roading seamless, even for inexperienced drivers. It may not match the Defender’s extreme off-road prowess or the Range Rover’s outright luxury. Still, as a do-it-all family SUV with genuine Land Rover capability, the Discovery Sport is genuinely hard to beat.
