Introduction

Range Rover Evoque is JLR’s most stylish compact luxury SUV. It sits below the Velar and Range Rover Sport in the family hierarchy. Its coupe-like silhouette and floating roofline draw instant attention wherever it goes. The design blends urban sophistication with genuine off-road DNA. This is the Range Rover built for city boulevards and weekend getaways alike. It turns heads in South Delhi just as effortlessly as it does on a rain-soaked Goan highway. The Evoque cares more about making a statement than chasing outright ruggedness. It would rather glide through Connaught Place traffic than scramble over boulder-strewn trails.

Performance: Refined, capable, and city-friendly

How does it drive? Compact luxury SUVs often compromise driving pleasure for style. Not the Evoque. It drives with the poise and confidence you expect from anything wearing a Range Rover badge. The 9-speed automatic torque converter gearbox shifts cleanly and stays unobtrusive in daily driving. Braking response feels progressive and reassuring in bumper-to-bumper city traffic. The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid engine produces 247 PS and 365 Nm of torque. It handles highway merges and city commutes with equal composure. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel mild-hybrid pushes out 201 PS and 430 Nm. That healthy low-end torque makes incline starts and overtaking manoeuvres effortless.

The Evoque weighs approximately 1,785 kg in the petrol variant. The 19-inch alloy wheels add a touch of firmness over broken Indian roads and speed breakers. The suspension is tuned for comfort and absorbs rough patches effectively overall. Ground clearance stands at 212 mm, adequate for most urban obstacles and light trails.

The 3D surround camera and ClearSight Ground View help in tight parking spots. The elevated driving position and well-sized mirrors give good outward visibility everywhere. Flush door handles retract neatly into the bodywork, adding to the sleek look. Navigating Mumbai traffic or cruising down the Expressway feels equally manageable.

Comfort: A quiet, well-appointed cabin with a premium feel

How comfortable is it? The Evoque rides with surprising refinement for a compact luxury SUV. The cabin stays impressively quiet, even on coarse road surfaces and at highway speeds. Road noise and wind noise remain well-controlled throughout most driving situations.

The driver’s seat offers generous electric adjustments with heating and ventilation. The front seats are large, supportive, and wrapped in Windsor leather upholstery. The rear bench is best suited for two full-size adults with adequate shoulder, knee, and headroom. The coupe-like roofline does eat into rear headroom slightly for taller passengers. Large doors and a sensible cabin layout make entry and exit convenient enough. The slightly upright rear seat backrest may compromise comfort on very long highway drives, though.

Child seat installation using ISOFIX anchors in the rear row is straightforward and easy. Power-operated child locks add an extra layer of family-friendly convenience. The two-zone climate control with rear vents and Cabin Air Purification Plus keeps the cabin fresh. Given Delhi’s air quality concerns, that cabin air purifier earns its keep every day.

In-Cabin Tech

How’s the tech? The 11.4-inch curved glass touchscreen infotainment system looks sharp with crisp graphics. The latest-generation Pivi Pro interface responds quickly and feels largely free of lag. However, the sheer number of features packed in can make the menu structure feel overwhelming at times. Finding specific settings sometimes requires a few too many taps and swipes. The interactive instrument cluster pairs well with the touchscreen for a cohesive digital experience. The Meridian sound system delivers rich, detailed audio quality throughout the cabin.

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly, keeping the centre console clutter-free. A wireless charging pad eliminates cable anxiety for compatible smartphones. JLR’s software updates arrive over-the-air to improve features and fix bugs over time. Limited physical controls mean heavy touchscreen reliance, which can sometimes distract the driver on the move.

Storage & Cargo

How’s storage and cargo? The Evoque offers around 591 litres of boot space with the rear seats up. Fold the 40:20:40 split rear bench down, and you unlock significantly more luggage room. The boot opening is wide enough to accommodate weekend bags and grocery runs with ease. Unlike the Defender’s side-hinged tailgate, the Evoque uses a conventional powered liftgate. Interior cubby holes and door pockets handle small items well enough for daily use. Rear passenger storage options could still use some improvement for everyday convenience.

The Evoque’s towing capacity reaches up to 1,800 kg (approximately 3,968 lbs) when properly equipped. That is respectable for its compact segment, though it falls well short of larger Land Rover models. The 65-litre fuel tank keeps highway runs between refuelling stops reasonable enough.

Value: A fashion-forward SUV with substance underneath

Is it a good value? The Evoque currently retails at around ₹64.86 lakh (ex-showroom) in India for the Autobiography variant. Both petrol and diesel options are priced identically, which simplifies the buying decision. A key rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLC, starts at around ₹77 lakh, while the BMW X3 begins at roughly ₹72.50 lakh. The Evoque undercuts both while offering genuine Range Rover design cachet and off-road heritage. It justifies its positioning against the Volvo XC60 and Jaguar F-Pace comfortably. The Premium Lightweight Architecture structure feels solid and well-assembled from every angle. Panel gaps are tight and consistent, exactly as you would expect at this price point. It sits below its German rivals in outright cabin space and rear-seat room, though. But it offers far more visual drama and brand desirability than most compact luxury SUV alternatives.

JLR India offers a standard warranty of three years with unlimited kilometres. Extended warranty packages are available through authorised JLR service centres. Local assembly at Tata’s Tamil Nadu plant has commenced, which could improve pricing and availability going forward.

Mileage: Expect modest fuel efficiency numbers

How’s the fuel economy? The 2.0-litre turbo-petrol mild-hybrid returns an ARAI-rated mileage of around 12.82 kmpl. The 2.0-litre turbo-diesel mild-hybrid delivers roughly 14.71 kmpl as per ARAI figures. Real-world mileage typically falls a couple of kilometres below these official ARAI-certified numbers. City driving with frequent stop-start cycles brings the figures down even further. The diesel engine remains the more practical choice for everyday Indian driving conditions. It balances torque delivery and fuel costs better than the petrol option over long ownership periods.

X Factor

Personality matters a lot to the Evoque, and it delivers in spades. This generation nails the coupe-SUV silhouette with its sweeping roofline and muscular haunches. It looks desirable and modern from nearly every angle on Indian roads. The flush door handles, signature LED DRLs, and rear directional indicators add to its visual sophistication. The floating roof design remains one of the most distinctive features in the segment. The Evoque drives with composure and quiet confidence on highways and city streets. Its Terrain Response 2 system offers four driving modes for varying conditions, from wet grass to gravel. Electronic controls make light off-roading accessible, even for inexperienced drivers. Purists might wish for more serious ground clearance and a low-range transfer case, though. Still, the Evoque’s effortless blend of style, luxury, and all-weather capability is hard to match at this price.

Minimalist Aesthetics Fused with Heritage Off-Road DNA

28-Feb-26 | By Aryan Jasaiwal
This vehicle effortlessly strikes a brilliant balance between high-end boulevard luxury and authentic, heritage-backed off-road capability. The exterior configuration embraces a highly sought-after minimalist design language that acts as an absolute magnet for eyeballs, while the interior layout pampers passengers with premium textures. On the move, the advanced driving mode selector allows the chassis to transition seamlessly across changing weather and terrain, perfectly complemented by a reassuringly high ground clearance. While hyper-analytical critics might note a desire for more tactile dashboard knobs or expanded rear cargo volume, the nimble handling and robust safety architecture confirm its status as an elite engineering package.
