Introduction
Land Rover Discovery sits among JLR’s most versatile SUV offerings. It shares the family lineup with Defender, Range Rover Sport, and the flagship Range Rover. Its design has evolved from the old-school boxy Disco into a sleeker, more Range Rover-like silhouette. The styling blends off-road capability with proper seven-seat luxury. This is the Land Rover built for big families and bigger journeys. It devours highway miles during the week and tackles trail roads on the weekend. The Discovery cares less about turning heads at a five-star hotel entrance. It would rather haul the entire family, the luggage, and a caravan to the hills.
Performance: Effortless, refined, and deceptively quick
How does it drive? Big, heavy SUVs usually feel sluggish and clumsy on tarmac. Not the Discovery. It drives with a composure that belies its nearly five-metre length. The 8-speed automatic gearbox from ZF delivers smooth, near-invisible shifts at all speeds. Braking feels progressive and confidence-inspiring in city traffic and stop-and-go jams. The sole engine on offer in India is the 3.0-litre inline-six mild-hybrid diesel, badged D350. It produces 345 PS and a thumping 700 Nm of torque. That enormous low-end shove makes highway overtakes, hill climbs, and heavy towing feel absolutely effortless. The 0–100 kmph sprint takes around 6.3 seconds, which is seriously quick for a vehicle weighing over 2,500 kg.
The Discovery rides on standard electronic air suspension across all Indian variants. At normal ride height, the suspension soaks up undulations beautifully and stays composed on the highway. Ground clearance sits at 207 mm in standard mode but can be raised to 285 mm in off-road height. The wading depth reaches up to 900 mm, which puts it firmly among the most capable off-roaders in this segment. Larger alloy wheels, available on Dynamic HSE and Metropolitan Edition trims, can add some firmness over sharp-edged potholes and broken tarmac.
Adaptive cruise control works smoothly on long expressway stints without jerky corrections. The 3D surround camera system helps in tight parking spots and narrow urban lanes. Large windows and the high, commanding driving position give excellent outward visibility everywhere. Navigating Delhi traffic or Himalayan switchbacks feels equally manageable.
Comfort: A spacious, quiet cabin built for the whole family
How comfortable is it? The Discovery rides with the refinement you expect at this price. The cabin stays remarkably quiet, even on rough surfaces and at triple-digit speeds. Road noise and wind noise remain well-controlled throughout most driving situations. The D350 diesel is impressively hushed, working away quietly in the background even when pushed hard.
The driver’s seat offers a 14-way electric adjustment with memory. The second row feels genuinely spacious, broad enough to seat three adults comfortably. Headroom, legroom, and shoulder room remain plentiful for tall passengers across the first two rows. The tall roofline and large glass area create a bright, open cabin feel. Air suspension lowers the ride height automatically for easy entry and exit when the ignition is switched off or a door is opened. Large doors, a sensible step-in height, and multiple grab handles make access convenient for all occupants.
The Discovery’s party trick is its genuine seven-seat layout. The third row of seats is electrically foldable and can be reconfigured from the tailgate, the C-pillar switches, the infotainment touchscreen, or even remotely via a smartphone. However, the third row is best suited for children or shorter adults. Legroom and thigh support fall short for taller passengers back there. Child seat installation using ISOFIX points in the second row is straightforward. Front passenger ISOFIX is also available as standard. The three-zone climate control keeps all three rows comfortable, with cabin air purification adding a welcome touch.
In-Cabin Tech
How’s the tech? The Pivi Pro infotainment system sits on an 11.4-inch touchscreen with crisp graphics. The screen responds quickly and feels free of annoying lag issues. However, the menu structure can feel layered and sometimes requires more taps than you’d like. The 12.3-inch digital driver display looks clean and shows all the essential information clearly. The Meridian sound system delivers rich, detailed audio quality throughout the cabin.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connect wirelessly. A wireless phone charger sits in the centre console. More USB charging ports up front would be a welcome addition, though. JLR’s software updates arrive over-the-air to improve features and fix niggles over time. Adaptive cruise control is available, but features like lane-keep assist and traffic sign recognition, present in global-spec models, are not offered on Indian variants. That is a notable omission at this price point.
Storage & Cargo
How’s storage and cargo? With all three rows up, the Discovery offers 258 litres of boot space. Fold the third row down, and you get a significantly more usable loadspace. Drop the second row as well, and the figure rises to a cavernous 2,391 litres. The electrically folding second and third rows make reconfiguration convenient, and the anti-pinch and stall detection tech prevents items from getting crushed during folding. Air suspension can lower the vehicle for easier cargo loading at the powered tailgate.
Interior storage is generous and practical. Beyond the usual glovebox and door pockets, you get a large storage box behind the rotary gear selector and a cool box under the front armrest. Front and rear cupholders, multiple 12V sockets, and a lockable glovebox round out the everyday convenience features. The Discovery’s towing capacity reaches up to 3,500 kg when properly equipped. That matches or beats most luxury SUV rivals in the Indian market. The 89-litre fuel tank ensures long highway runs between refuelling stops.
Value: A practical family SUV with genuine off-road credentials
Is it a good value? The Discovery starts at around ₹1.26 crore (ex-showroom) for the Gemini Edition in India. Prices go up to approximately ₹1.39 crore for the Tempest Edition. The main rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLS, starts at around ₹1.28 crore. The BMW X7 also sits in a similar price bracket. A sensibly specced Discovery blends seven-seat practicality with genuine off-road hardware. It justifies its premium over more road-focused rivals like the Audi Q7 and Volvo XC90 if you need all-terrain ability. The aluminium-intensive monocoque structure feels solid and well-built from every angle. Panel gaps are tight and consistent, as you’d expect at this price. It sits below a full-fat Range Rover in outright luxury feel, though. But it offers far more seating flexibility and rugged capability than most luxury SUV rivals.
JLR India offers a standard warranty of three years with unlimited kilometres. Extended warranty packages are available through authorised JLR service centres. Some competitors like Toyota include complimentary service packages, but JLR does not. The Discovery scored a full five-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, which adds peace of mind.
Mileage: Expect decent but not frugal fuel efficiency
How’s the fuel economy? The 3.0-litre D350 diesel returns an ARAI-rated mileage of around 12–13 kmpl. Real-world mileage typically falls below these official ARAI-certified numbers. Expect around 8–10 kmpl in city driving with frequent stops. Highway cruising at sensible speeds can push the figure closer to 11–12 kmpl. The mild-hybrid system helps with start-stop efficiency and marginal fuel savings. For a vehicle of this size and weight, the diesel’s efficiency is reasonable. The 89-litre fuel tank gives a comfortable range of over 800 km on a full tank during highway driving, making long-distance road trips genuinely practical.
X Factor
Versatility matters a lot to the Discovery, and it delivers. This generation has moved away from the old Disco’s boxy, utilitarian look toward a more polished, Range Rover-inspired design. It looks imposing and premium from nearly every angle on Indian roads. The stepped roofline, a classic Discovery signature, remains but is more subtly integrated now. The offset rear number plate is a nod to previous generations, though it divides opinion. Some find it quirky; others feel it disrupts the rear-end design.
The Discovery drives with composure and dignity on highways and off-road. Its Terrain Response 2 system handles everything from sand to mud to rock crawling. A two-speed transfer box offers selectable high and low range gears with a 50:50 torque split. Electronic controls and wade sensing make off-roading seamless, even for inexperienced drivers. Purists might miss the old-school hardware feel, but the Discovery’s effortless approach to any terrain is hard to beat. Where the Defender plays the rugged adventurer and the Range Rover plays the luxury limousine, the Discovery sits right in the middle. It is the family car that can do everything, and that is exactly its greatest strength.
