Exterior and Design Updates

The new BMW X5 features a reimagined kidney grille, drawing inspiration from the brand’s 1960s models. This grille includes illuminated borders and pixel-style elements across its horizontal layout. Integrated lighting within the grille is a notable feature of BMW’s Neue Klasse design language.

The bumper design resembles that of the BMW iX3, though with distinct detailing and inserts. The fifth-generation X5 sports alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and blacked-out B and C pillars. The prototype does not yet have production-spec door handles, but flush handles similar to the iX3 are likely. At the rear, the X5 displays wavy, interconnected tail lamps and retains the split tailgate design.

Interior and Technology

While the interior of the new X5 has not been revealed, expectations point to a cockpit similar to the BMW iX3 and BMW i3. Anticipated features include a large central touchscreen infotainment system and a full-width display along the lower windshield, both part of BMW’s Panoramic iDrive system.

Powertrain Options and Launch Timeline

BMW plans to offer a broad range of powertrain options for the new X5. Alongside gasoline, diesel, and hybrid variants, a hydrogen-powered version is reportedly in development with Toyota. A fully electric X5 is also under consideration, with the possibility of an extended range electric vehicle (EREV).

At launch, the new X5 is expected to feature the 40 xDrive system. This setup includes a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine paired with a mild hybrid system, which will be widely available worldwide. Select markets may receive the diesel-powered 40d xDrive system.

Plug-in hybrid options will include the X5 50e xDrive and X5 M60e xDrive. The 50e xDrive is expected to offer an improved electric range of about 80 km. Updates to the M60e xDrive are anticipated, though specific details remain undisclosed.

Fully electric versions of the X5 are scheduled for release between late 2026 and mid-2027. The iX5 60 xDrive may launch around December 2026, while the iX5 50 xDrive and iX5 M70 xDrive variants are expected in 2027. All xDrive electric variants will feature two electric motors, one at the front and one at the rear.
