BMW unveils fifth-generation X5 with five powertrain options and 845 km range
The all-new BMW X5 debuts with multiple powertrain choices, enhanced efficiency, and a claimed 845 km range, setting new benchmarks in the luxury SUV segment.
BMW has revealed the fifth-generation X5, introducing five powertrain options and a claimed range of up to 845km (WLTP) for the all-electric iX5. This marks a significant step in the brand’s approach to offering versatile propulsion technologies in the luxury SUV segment.
Key Highlights
- BMW X5 fifth generation offers five powertrain options, including electric and hydrogen.
- The all-electric iX5 claims up to 845 km of WLTP range and a 400 km recharge in 10 minutes.
- Production begins in August 2026 at the Spartanburg plant with global deliveries later this year.
- Neue Klasse-inspired design and new Panoramic iDrive interface debut in the new X5.
Design and Technology Updates
The fifth-generation X5 features BMW’s latest Neue Klasse-inspired design language. Updates include slimmer headlights, a redesigned kidney grille, flush-fitting door handles, and cleaner body surfacing. These changes aim to give the SUV a modern and refined appearance.
Inside, the new X5 debuts the Panoramic iDrive interface. This system features a full-width display at the base of the windscreen, a large central touchscreen, and BMW Operating System X. The updated interior focuses on improved technology and driver interaction.
Multiple Powertrain Choices
The new BMW X5 will be available with petrol and diesel mild-hybrid engines, a plug-in hybrid, the fully electric iX5, and a hydrogen fuel-cell variant. The hydrogen model is set to enter series production in 2028. This strategy allows customers to select a drivetrain that fits their needs, rather than transitioning to a single technology.
The iX5 stands out as the most significant addition to the lineup. Built on BMW’s new 800V electrical architecture, the iX5 supports high-power DC fast charging. It can recover up to 400km of driving range in just 10 minutes. In its most efficient configuration, the iX5 offers a claimed driving range of up to 845km (WLTP).
BMW’s hydrogen fuel-cell X5 further demonstrates the company’s commitment to exploring multiple propulsion technologies. This approach highlights BMW’s long-term strategy of not relying solely on battery-electric vehicles.
Production and Launch Timeline
Production of the new X5 will begin in August 2026 at BMW’s Spartanburg plant in South Carolina, US. Global deliveries are expected to start later this year. However, BMW India has not yet announced a launch timeline for the fifth-generation X5.
CarBike 360 Says
The fifth-generation BMW X5 marks a significant leap forward with its diverse powertrain lineup, extended driving range, and cutting-edge technology. By blending performance, efficiency, and premium comfort, BMW continues to strengthen the X5’s position in the luxury SUV segment, making it a compelling choice for buyers seeking versatility without compromising on innovation or driving experience.
