Next-Generation Mercedes-Benz A-Class to Launch in 2028 with Hybrid and EV Options
Mercedes-Benz will debut the next-generation A-Class hatchback in 2028 with hybrid and electric options. The model will use the MMA platform, offer updated design and features, and remain the brand’s entry-level global offering.

Mercedes-Benz will introduce a new generation of the A-Class hatchback in 2028. This model will serve as the brand's global entry-level offering and will feature both hybrid and electric powertrains. The A-Class EV will compete with the upcoming Audi A2 e-tron hatchback.
Key Highlights
- Mercedes-Benz will launch the next-generation A-Class hatchback in 2028
- New A-Class will offer hybrid and electric powertrains with up to 354hp in AWD EV variants
- Design updates include a longer wheelbase, wider tracks, and a modernized traditional look
- AMG performance variants will be available for both ICE and EV models
- Current A-Class will remain on sale until the new model arrives
Powertrain and Platform Details

The 2028 A-Class will use the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which also underpins the new Mercedes-Benz CLA. The CLA is available globally in hybrid and electric versions, though only the CLA Electric is currently planned for India.
Details about the A-Class hybrid powertrain remain unconfirmed. However, it may use a setup similar to the CLA hybrid, which includes a 1.5-litre 4-cylinder turbo-petrol engine, a 1.3kWh battery, and either a front-mounted (FWD) or dual-motor (AWD) configuration. Mild hybrid variants are also expected, powered by the same engine. Power for the internal combustion engine (ICE) A-Class variants could range from 156hp to 212hp.
The A-Class EV will likely use the same 800V platform as the CLA Electric, offering 58kWh LFP or 85kWh NMC battery options. Standard models may feature a 224hp rear motor (RWD), while dual-motor (AWD) variants could deliver up to 354hp. Mercedes-Benz has not yet decided if the A-Class EV will use the 2-speed gearbox from the CLA Electric and new GLB EV or a single-speed transmission.
Design, Features, and Production
The next-generation A-Class will also see performance-focused ICE and EV variants developed by Mercedes-AMG. The electric AMG version could exceed 500hp. The new A-Class is expected to feature a five-link rear suspension for improved comfort and handling, though lower ICE variants may retain the current model's torsion-beam rear suspension.
Switching to the MMA platform will likely increase the A-Class's dimensions, providing a longer wheelbase and wider tracks for more interior space. The design will remain traditional but with modern details. The front may adopt a 'shark-nose' fascia similar to the new CLA and GLC. The side profile will use framed doors instead of the CLA’s frameless ones and may include plastic cladding on the wheel arches, a sloping roofline, and an angled rear windscreen.
The ground clearance will be raised in the EV version to accommodate the battery pack, with hybrid models maintaining a similar ride height. This change will result in higher seating positions, but sources indicate the A-Class will not resemble a crossover. The interior will focus on easy ingress and egress, better outward visibility, and seating for up to five occupants. A sliding or adjustable rear bench is under consideration.
Market Plans and Naming
The current A-Class will remain on sale until the new generation arrives. Mercedes-Benz had planned to discontinue the A-Class in 2025 to focus on EVs and luxury ICE models. However, lower global EV demand has led the company to continue offering the A-Class until at least 2028.
The A-Class nameplate may change as Mercedes-Benz considers aligning it with the three-letter naming convention of models like the CLA, GLB, and GLA. The 2028 A-Class could be renamed CSA (Compact Sports A-Class). Production will take place at the Kecskemét plant in Hungary, where the CLA and GLA are also built.
In India, the current A-Class hatchback was sold only in AMG A 45 S form. Now, only the A-Class Limousine is available, with prices starting at Rs 44.45 lakh (ex-showroom).
