Porsche will end production of the internal combustion engine (ICE) version of the Macan by mid-2026. The company's finance chief, Jochen Breckner, confirmed this during a recent earnings call. He also stated that existing inventory could be sold into 2027 in select markets. This marks a significant transition for one of Porsche’s most successful models.
Key Highlights
- Porsche will end Macan ICE production by mid-2026 with sales continuing in some markets into 2027
- Over 10000 Macan units sold globally in Q1 2026, marking an increase from the previous year
- A new SUV codenamed M1 will launch around 2028 using the Premium Platform Combustion architecture
- The new SUV will likely feature a front-biased all-wheel-drive system and over 200 HP engine
- Porsche will continue offering the Macan Electric as part of its electrification strategy
The Macan remains strong in global markets. In the first quarter of 2026, Porsche sold over 10,000 units, an increase from the same period last year. The Macan was introduced in India in 2014 and has received several updates, which have helped maintain its popularity.
Electric Strategy and New Model Plans
As Porsche phases out the combustion-powered Macan, its electric strategy continues. The Macan Electric will remain a core offering. Porsche is also developing a new SUV, currently codenamed “M1.” This model is expected to arrive around 2028. It will serve as a spiritual successor to the Macan rather than a direct replacement.
The new SUV will use the Premium Platform Combustion (PPC). This architecture is shared with the latest Audi Q5. The collaboration aims to optimize development costs. Porsche plans to make targeted changes to ensure the vehicle maintains its unique driving characteristics.
Technical Changes and Performance Expectations

The upcoming SUV will likely feature a front-biased all-wheel-drive system. In this setup, the rear wheels engage only when extra traction is needed. This is a shift from Porsche’s traditional rear-driven dynamics, a hallmark since 1931.
Performance details are still emerging. The new SUV is expected to use a 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine, similar to the Audi Q5’s, producing over 200 HP. More powerful variants may also be developed. Higher-performance trims such as S, GTS, and Turbo are anticipated. Chassis enhancements will help align the model with Porsche’s performance standards.
Former CEO Oliver Blume has stated that the new SUV will be clearly differentiated from the electric Macan. This approach allows Porsche to serve both combustion and electric vehicle customers during the transition. The development timeline for the new SUV has been accelerated, with a projected three-year cycle from concept to production.
Porsche’s decision to end the ICE Macan marks the end of an era. At the same time, it signals the beginning of a new chapter for the brand’s SUV lineup as it balances electrification with its performance legacy.

Porsche’s decision to phase out the Macan ICE by 2026 reflects its strong commitment to an electrified future. While the current model bows out, the upcoming 2028 SUV promises to carry forward Porsche’s performance DNA in a new-age avatar. For enthusiasts, this transition marks the end of an era and the beginning of a bold, electric-driven chapter.
