Renault is developing a new 1.2-litre hybrid powertrain for the upcoming Bridger, in addition to the previously reported 1.2-litre, 4-cylinder MPFI petrol engine. The hybrid variant will use a 3-cylinder engine running on the Miller cycle, which is known for its efficiency. This design allows for improved packaging of hybrid components due to the smaller engine size.
Key Highlights
- Renault Bridger will offer a 1.2-litre hybrid powertrain with a 3-cylinder Miller cycle engine
- Hybrid system aims for high fuel efficiency using technology from AVL's recent demonstrator
- For India, engine displacement likely to remain under 1200cc for small-car tax benefits
Hybrid Engine Details
The 3-cylinder Miller cycle engine is expected to deliver higher fuel efficiency, a common goal for hybrid systems. The electric motor will compensate for any loss in power resulting from the Miller cycle. Renault aims to achieve a high fuel-efficiency figure with this setup.
The company may use technology from AVL's high-efficiency demonstrator, which was recently showcased at the Vienna Motor Symposium. The demonstrator, installed in a Dacia Duster, claims an efficiency of 3.3 litres per 100km, equivalent to 30kpl. AVL states the concept engine is based on the Horse Powertrain HR12 unit, enlarged to just over 1200cc, with several enhancements to reach these efficiency levels.
India-Specific Adaptations
For the Indian market, Renault is likely to keep the engine displacement just under 1200cc. This move would allow the Bridger to qualify for lower small-car tax benefits in India. The company could incorporate select features of the H12 concept while using the regular HR12 3-cylinder engine block.
These developments indicate Renault's focus on efficiency and cost-effectiveness for the Bridger in India. The hybrid powertrain is still under development, and more details are expected as the launch approaches.
