In January 2024, the Indian car market experienced a robust surge, with 3.94 Lakh passenger cars sold, marking a 14% YoY increase and an impressive 37% rise from December 2023, nearly reaching the 4 Lakh dispatch landmark. Amidst these dynamics, the Maruti Baleno claimed the spotlight, recording sales of 37,013 units. Diverse trends emerged, with compact SUVs like Tata Punch gaining traction, while Hyundai's Creta faced a 12% YoY decline. Noteworthy was Toyota's Innova Crysta, boasting an exceptional 559% YoY growth.
Top Performers
In January 2024, Maruti Suzuki's hatchback, the Baleno, claimed the top spot with 19,630 units sold. This impressive performance marked a 20% increase compared to January 2023 sales of 16,357 units, solidifying Maruti Suzuki's dominance in the hatchback segment.
Tata's Punch SUV secured second position, demonstrating a remarkable 50% year-on-year growth. With 17,978 units sold in January 2024 compared to the 12,006 units sold in January 2023, the Punch showcased Tata's commitment to innovation and consumer preferences in the SUV market.
Another success for Tata was the Nexon, securing the fourth position with 17,182 units sold. The model exhibited a 10% increase in sales compared to the same period last year, reflecting Tata's consistent performance in the competitive SUV segment.
Maruti Suzuki's Ertiga, a multi-utility vehicle (MUV), recorded 14,632 units sold in Jan 2024 compared to the 9,750 units sold in Jan 2023, marking a significant 50% YoY growth. The Ertiga's popularity indicates a continued trend of consumers opting for versatile and spacious vehicles.
Mahindra's SUV, the Scorpio, showed impressive growth with 14,293 units sold in Jan 2024 compared to the 8,715 units sold in Jan 2023, boasting a remarkable 64% year-on-year increase. This surge in sales highlights Mahindra's successful strategies in the SUV market.
