Stellantis pioneers a 2-speed transmission for off-road EVs, promising improved torque and capabilities, marking a significant step in electric vehicle innovation.

Stellantis to Introduce Off-Road 2-speed Transmission for EVs

Key Highlights

  • Stellantis files patent for 2-speed transmission for electric off-roaders.
  • The system features 'on-road' and 'off-road' gears.
  • Offers enhanced low-end torque for challenging terrains.
  • Potential for tank-turn capabilities.
  • Addresses limitations of single-speed electric vehicle gearboxes.
  • Production implementation remains uncertain, pending further developments.

In a move that could redefine the capabilities of electric off-roaders, Stellantis has filed a patent with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) for a revolutionary 2-speed transmission system tailored specifically for electric off-road vehicles.

Current Landscape: 2-Speed Transmissions in EVs

While some electric vehicles, such as the Porsche Taycan and Audi e-tron GT, already feature 2-speed transmissions, these are primarily designed for enhancing acceleration and top-speed performance. Stellantis, however, aims to take it a step further by introducing a transmission system that addresses the unique demands of off-road driving.

The Game-Changer: 'On-Road' and 'Off-Road' Gears

The Stellantis-patented 2-speed transmission for electric off-roaders will comprise distinct 'on-road' and 'off-road' gears. This innovative system is expected to dynamically alter power delivery, providing electric vehicles with the ability to match the off-road prowess of their internal combustion engine counterparts.

Unveiling the Off-Road Gear's Power Dynamics

The 'off-road' gear is anticipated to deliver substantial low-end torque, a crucial factor in navigating challenging terrains and overcoming obstacles. Reports suggest that this transmission system will employ two planetary gearsets positioned between the electric motor and axles, potentially enabling Stellantis EVs to execute tank turns similar to the Hummer EV and Mercedes-EQG.

Overcoming Electric Vehicle Limitations

The patent filing from Stellantis highlights a crucial limitation in traditional electric vehicle designs. While single-speed gearboxes offer excellent torque capabilities, they often fall short in providing sustained high torque – a necessity for prolonged low-speed and high-torque operation during off-road driving.

Future Prospects: From Patent to Production?

While the patent filing showcases Stellantis' commitment to pushing the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, it remains to be seen whether this innovative 2-speed transmission system will make its way into production models. As with any patent filing, the journey from concept to reality involves numerous factors, including feasibility, cost considerations, and market demand. Stellantis enthusiasts and the automotive industry, in general, will be eagerly awaiting further developments in this promising technological advancement.

CarBike360 Says

Stellantis' groundbreaking 2-speed transmission for electric off-roaders could revolutionize EV capabilities, offering distinct 'on-road' and 'off-road' gears. With potential benefits such as enhanced low-end torque and tank-turn capabilities, the patent filing underscores Stellantis' commitment to innovation. The transition from concept to production awaits scrutiny, keeping the automotive industry on the edge of anticipation.
