The Suzuki Katana is one of the brand’s most legendary supernaked sport bikes in India. However, due to poor sales figures, the Suzuki Katana is now being discontinued from the Indian two-wheeler market. This sudden shutdown has impacted Suzuki’s portfolio in India, and motorcycle enthusiasts are stunned by this decision. As per the latest report, after Suzuki announced the discontinuation of the Katana from the Indian market, now only the iconic Hayabusa remains as Suzuki’s 4-cylinder offering.
The discontinuation of the Suzuki Katana marks the end of an era for big bike aficionados. As a Japanese brand, it was really difficult to shut down the operations of sales and services for Katana, as with this discontinuation, Suzuki would gradually decrease its fleet in the Indian two-wheeler landscape. This decision comes after the Katana had spent just over 3 years in the Indian market.
Super-Class Performance with a Distinct Legacy
The name ‘Katana’ has been revolving around for many years now in the global market. The 2024 iteration was blended with retro styling and subtle modernity. While looking at the motorcycle, the front fascia offers a fairing integrated with a square headlight. This robust and precise design gives the bike a futuristic identity that will not be forgotten.
Suzuki Katana: Performance & Features

While looking at the bike at first glance, I inferred, "What makes the Suzuki Katana so special?" Well, the answer lies in its powertrain. The Suzuki Katana was powered by a 999 cc, inline-4-cylinder engine that was capable of producing 152 HP of power and 106 Nm of peak torque. This engine was sourced from the GSX-S1000, ensuring that the next generation of riders receives authentic performance.
However, despite its blended style, K5-derived 999 cc engine, and segment-leading features, the Katana never truly found its footing in India’s competitive superbike landscape, facing challenges in sales and customer demand. The supernaked sport bike was priced at Rs 13.61 Lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi) in India. Suzuki has, unfortunately, shut down its operations in India, whereas its sole competitor was Honda’s recently launched CB 1000 Hornet SP in India. This recently launched bike is priced at Rs 12.36 Lakh (ex-showroom) in India.

Why did the Suzuki Katana fail in India?
This is the question that many motorcycle enthusiasts would be looking for. Well, the bike had everything you can expect from a 1000 cc super sport bike. However, when it comes to sales figures, it was a disaster compared to other motorcycles under the Suzuki portfolio. Affection for old-school Japanese reliability and the unmistakable inline-four sound could not override the practical challenges facing premium motorcycle buyers in India.
Owning such a powerful motorcycle will eventually bring high maintenance fees, limited ownership support, and evolving preferences for adventure and parallel-twin-powered models. The super sport bike also brought a host of advanced features, such as Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS), traction control, ride-by-wire electronic throttle system, bi-directional quick shift system, and low RPM assist.
Conclusion
The discontinuation of the Katana underscores Suzuki’s intent to recalibrate its product mix in India, reflecting changing market scenarios and customer preferences. Although the Katana will continue to evolve in global markets with new colors and features, as showcased in the recent 2025 model unveiled in Japan.
