Key Highlights

  • Tata Group's Agaratas completes main structure at Gujarat battery plant
  • Sanand facility will have 20 GWh annual capacity in first phase
  • Construction used over 24,000 tonnes of steel and 2,500 workers
  • Plant to support India's clean energy and employment goals
  • Retail sales up 9.5 percent in first 11 months of FY2026

Facility Construction and Capacity

The completed structure measures 700 meters in length and 150 meters in width, reaching a peak height of 34 meters. The built-up area covers 105,000 square meters. Construction required over 24,000 tonnes of steel. At peak times, more than 2,500 workers were present on-site. Tata Projects Limited is leading the construction, with Tata Consulting Engineers providing support. Most steel and other materials have been sourced from within India.

Once operational, the Sanand facility will produce advanced battery cells. These cells will serve electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The first phase targets an annual output of 20 GWh, supporting India's push for clean energy technologies.

Strategic Role and Employment Impact

The Sanand plant is central to India's clean energy goals. India aims for net zero emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. The facility is expected to generate significant regional employment. Jobs will span production, operations, engineering, maintenance, and quality assurance. Agratas has committed to local workforce development programs to support these roles.

Agratas is also building a second battery manufacturing facility in Bridgwater, UK. This expansion is part of the company's global industrialization strategy.

Industry Context and Market Trends

GST rate reductions and strong utility vehicle demand have driven retail sales up by 9.5% in the first 11 months of FY2026. Above-normal monsoons, a GST cut from 12% to 5%, and pre-buying ahead of emission norm changes have increased wholesale volumes. In March 2026, sales reached 5.49 lakh units, marking a 29% increase over the same month last year and closing out the fiscal year on a strong note.
