Tata Group completes main structure of 20 GWh battery plant in Gujarat

The Tata Group's battery division, Agratas, has completed the main structural frame of its battery manufacturing facility in Sanand, Gujarat. This facility will have an annual production capacity of 20 GWh in its first phase and aims to begin operations in 2027.

Facility Construction and Capacity

The completed structure measures 700 meters in length and 150 meters in width, reaching a peak height of 34 meters. The built-up area covers 105,000 square meters. Construction required over 24,000 tonnes of steel. At peak times, more than 2,500 workers were present on-site. Tata Projects Limited is leading the construction, with Tata Consulting Engineers providing support. Most steel and other materials have been sourced from within India.

Once operational, the Sanand facility will produce advanced battery cells. These cells will serve electric vehicles and energy storage systems. The first phase targets an annual output of 20 GWh, supporting India's push for clean energy technologies.

The Sanand plant is central to India's clean energy goals. India aims for net zero emissions by 2070 and 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030. In March 2026, sales reached 5.49 lakh units, marking a 29% increase over the same month last year and closing out the fiscal year on a strong note.
