Tata Sierra Launches with Excelfore OTA and Remote Diagnostics Platform
Tata Motors has deployed Excelfore's OTA software update and remote diagnostics platform in the new Tata Sierra, marking a production-scale move toward software-defined vehicles using open industry standards.

Tata Motors has introduced Excelfore's over-the-air (OTA) software update and remote diagnostics platform in the new Tata Sierra. This marks the first production-scale deployment of the technology in a Tata vehicle. The platform uses Excelfore's eSync OTA solution and operates on Amazon Web Services IoT Core.
Key Highlights
- Tata Sierra is first to use Excelfore OTA and remote diagnostics at production scale
- Platform enables secure software updates and diagnostics using open industry standards
- Excelfore technology is deployed in over 19 million vehicles globally
Software-Defined Vehicle Integration
The Tata Sierra has been designed as a software-defined vehicle (SDV) from the outset. OTA updates and service-oriented diagnostics are core features of the vehicle's architecture. This approach allows software updates and improvements throughout the vehicle's life without requiring physical service visits.
Shrinath Acharya, CEO of Excelfore, stated that the Sierra shows how internal combustion engine vehicles can also become software-defined. He emphasized that intelligent OTA orchestration is not limited to electric vehicles.
Platform Capabilities and Industry Standards
The Excelfore platform supports secure firmware and software updates, differential delivery, rollback, and recovery. It manages multiple electronic control units (ECUs) at the same time. The system enables bidirectional cloud-to-vehicle communication for continuous monitoring. Updates are transmitted over automotive Ethernet networks and through gateway ECUs across CAN buses.
The deployment relies on open industry standards. The OTA infrastructure follows eSync Alliance specifications. Remote diagnostics use the ASAM Service-Oriented Vehicle Diagnostics standard. Tata Motors chose this approach to ensure interoperability across suppliers and to avoid dependence on proprietary systems.
Global Reach and Future Plans
Excelfore, based in Silicon Valley, has its technology deployed in over 19 million vehicles worldwide. The company operates in Europe, the United States, China, Japan, and India. It works with major cloud providers such as AWS, Azure, and Google.
Tata Motors aims to expand its annual two-wheeler production to about 10 million units by 2030. The company continues to invest in new technologies and infrastructure to support its growth and modernization efforts.
