Vinfast has filed a design patent for the second-generation VF8 SUV in India. The design closely matches the VF8 model recently unveiled in Vietnam, with only minor differences. It remains uncertain if Vinfast will launch the VF8 in the Indian market.
Key Highlights
- Vinfast files design patent for second-generation VF8 SUV in India
- VF8 features a 60.13 kWh battery and 228 HP front-axle electric motor
- NEDC-claimed range is 500km with charging from 10 to 70 percent in under 30 minutes
- If launched, VF8 would compete with Mahindra XEV 9e and Tata Harrier EV
Design Details and Features

The VF8 features a distinctive ‘V’-shaped light bar at the front, accompanied by segmented daytime running lights. The grille is blanked off and finished in black. The bumper includes air curtains on the sides and lower intakes. The patent image from a top view does not show a panoramic glass roof, a feature present on the VF7 and VF6 models.
The side profile of the VinFast VF8 displays a rising window line and a pronounced character line. Contrasting black wheel arches are visible, and the alloy wheels have a unique design compared to the Vietnam-spec model. At the rear, the VF8 sports a V-shaped LED taillight. The black bumper has a different design from the Vietnam version, with repositioned reflectors.
Powertrain and Performance
The Vietnam-spec VF8 uses a 60.13 kWh battery pack. This battery is paired with a front-axle-mounted electric motor, delivering 228 HP and 330 Nm of torque. The VF8 achieves a claimed NEDC range of 500 km. Charging from 10 to 70 percent takes less than 30 minutes.
Market Position and Competition
If Vinfast introduces the VF8 in India, it would likely be positioned above the VF7 due to its longer length of 4.7 meters compared to the VF7’s 4.5 meters. The VF8 would compete with high-end variants of the Mahindra XEV 9e and the Tata Harrier EV. The BYD Atto 2 DM-i PHEV is also mentioned as a competitor. CarBike 360 Says
VinFast’s latest patent filing gives the second-generation VF 8 a strong foothold in India’s growing EV landscape, even though the company has not confirmed a launch timeline yet. With a revised design, updated hardware, and a more focused electric SUV package, the model looks better placed for global expansion. For now, the filing keeps anticipation high and suggests VinFast is steadily building its India roadmap.
