The airbag is integrated into the inside of the front apron of the Yamaha Tricity 300. In the event of a frontal collision, the airbag deploys in front of the rider. This design intends to enhance rider protection while maintaining the scooter's balance, storage space, and overall riding experience.

Autoliv developed the system with everyday usability as a priority. The company ensured the airbag does not interfere with the scooter’s normal operation. The product has undergone validation consistent with relevant development standards. This includes advanced simulations and full-scale crash testing to confirm its effectiveness and reliability.

Industry Context and Previous Efforts

Airbag systems for motorcyclists are typically found in premium riding jackets or as airbag vests. Integration of airbag technology directly into vehicles is rare. One of the few production examples is the Honda Gold Wing Tour, which features a built-in airbag system.

Autoliv has previously collaborated with the Piaggio Group to develop a similar airbag system for the MP3 scooter. However, that system has not yet reached mass-market production. The Yamaha Tricity 300 Airbag is already listed on Yamaha’s European website, though pricing details have not been announced.

Mikael Bratt, President and CEO of Autoliv, stated that this collaboration is a key development beyond the company’s core business. He emphasized its contribution to future growth and its importance in advancing motorcyclist protection, which typically lags that of light-vehicle occupants.

Potential for Wider Adoption

The introduction of the airbag system on the Yamaha Tricity 300 could pave the way for broader adoption of this technology in mass-market scooters. The fact that both the Yamaha Tricity 300 and Piaggio MP3 are three-wheeled models suggests that this platform may offer practical advantages for integrating airbag systems.

As more manufacturers explore vehicle-integrated airbag systems, the technology could become more common in the scooter and motorcycle market, potentially improving rider safety across a wider range of models.

Conclusion

As urban mobility continues to evolve, Yamaha’s collaboration with Autoliv marks a milestone in two-wheeler safety innovation. The new airbag system for the Tricity 300 not only elevates rider protection but also paves the way for broader adoption of advanced safety technologies in scooters, promising a safer and smarter commuting future.
