The Delhi government has suspended the purchase of new petrol, diesel, CNG, and hybrid vehicles for six months. This measure is part of the 'My India, My Contribution' Delhi Action Plan, launched in response to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation and prudent spending. The initiative comes amid rising global energy concerns linked to ongoing geopolitical tensions.

Key Highlights

  • Delhi suspends new petrol, diesel, CNG and hybrid vehicle purchases for six months
  • The action plan promotes public transport, carpooling and work-from-home to reduce fuel use
  • Fuel prices increased by Rs 3 per litre for the first time in over four years
  • Draft EV Policy 2026 proposes incentives for electric vehicles and tighter restrictions on ICE vehicles

Key Measures in the Action Plan

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced the suspension, stating that no new conventional or hybrid vehicles will be bought by the government during this period. The action plan aims to reduce both fuel and electricity consumption across the capital.

The plan encourages the use of public transport and carpooling. It also promotes work-from-home arrangements and limits government expenditure. Specific steps include 'Metro Monday,' where employees are urged to use the metro, and working from home two days each week. The government will also restrict the use of official vehicles and increase the use of video conferencing for meetings.

Residents are urged to voluntarily observe one 'No Vehicle Day' each week. The government encourages greater use of public transport systems such as metro rail and buses to reduce reliance on personal vehicles.

Support for Public Transport and Cost Reductions

To improve last-mile connectivity, Delhi has developed a route plan for 58 feeder buses covering 29 government colonies. Government employees who spend at least 25% of their transport allowance on public transport will receive an additional 10% allowance. The plan also encourages logistics and freight companies to shift more cargo movement to railways to help reduce diesel consumption.

The government has decided to cut domestic travel expenditure across departments by up to 20%. Half of all official meetings will now be conducted online to further reduce travel and fuel use.

Fuel Price Increases and EV Policy Draft

State-owned oil marketing companies have increased petrol and diesel prices by around Rs 3 per litre. This marks the first price hike in over four years. The increase comes as state-run fuel retailers face rising global energy prices due to the conflict in West Asia.

Recently, the Delhi government released the draft EV Policy 2026. The policy proposes new incentives for electric vehicles and tighter restrictions on internal combustion engine vehicles in phases. The aim is to accelerate the shift towards cleaner mobility options in the city.

Market Outlook and Policy Extensions

According to recent reports, India’s used-car market could reach 9-10 million units by FY31. The sector is expected to expand at an 8-11% compound annual growth rate by volume. The government has also extended the bid due date for a related initiative to June 29, 2026.

CarBike 360 Says

This temporary suspension marks a decisive shift in Delhi’s approach to sustainable mobility and fuel conservation. While it may disrupt short-term buying plans, the move is expected to accelerate electric vehicle adoption and reshape consumer preferences. As the policy unfolds, its long-term impact on the automotive market and environmental goals will be closely watched.
