2026 Volkswagen Polo Electric Production Model Leaked Ahead of European Launch
Volkswagen is set to launch the fully electric Polo in Europe, with leaked images showing a design similar to the previous ICE model. The ID Polo EV offers two battery options, up to 451 km range, and introduces the first electric GTI variant.

Volkswagen is set to reintroduce the Polo as a fully electric model, targeting the European market first. The official launch is expected later in 2024, likely in May. Recently, images of the production version of the Volkswagen ID Polo EV surfaced online, offering a detailed look at the upcoming vehicle.
Key Highlights
- Volkswagen Polo returns as a fully electric model for Europe
- Production version images reveal design similar to discontinued ICE Polo
- ID Polo EV offers 38 kWh and 56 kWh battery options with up to 451 km range
- GTI variant is Volkswagen’s first electric GTI with 226 hp output
- Launch expected in May 2024 with advanced digital cockpit features
Design and Exterior Features
The new Polo EV retains much of the silhouette from its discontinued internal combustion engine (ICE) counterpart. Volkswagen has preserved the classic, understated appearance that defined previous Polo generations. This design choice aims to maintain a strong connection with long-time enthusiasts as the Polo transitions to electric power.
Key exterior highlights include wraparound headlamps with top-mounted LED daytime running lights (DRLs), a closed-off grille, and a slatted bumper design. The side profile features circular wheel arches, standard front door handles, C-pillar mounted rear door handles, blacked-out B-pillars, and a gently sloping roofline. The charging port is positioned on the right side above the front fender. Alloy wheel designs closely resemble those seen on the ID. 2all concept, though options may vary by variant. The production-ready outside rear-view mirrors are larger and more practical than those on the concept.
GTI Variant and Dimensions
The leaked images also reveal the ID Polo GTI variant, which stands out with an illuminated Volkswagen logo and vertically stacked LED DRLs. The bumper features honeycomb-style inserts with red accents, and exclusive GTI badging appears on the right side. The GTI is expected to have unique, sportier alloy wheels and will be Volkswagen’s first electric GTI model.
The Polo EV measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,600 mm. The previous ICE Polo sold in India was classified as a sub-4-meter hatchback.
Interior and Technology
Volkswagen has prioritized practicality and user experience in the ID Polo EV. The interior features numerous physical buttons alongside a comprehensive digital setup. The cockpit includes a 13-inch touchscreen infotainment system and a 10.25-inch digital instrument display. Users can customize display themes, including a retro mode inspired by the Golf Mk1, which offers a tape deck-style interface and analogue-style dials. Rotary dials are provided for volume and radio control, while the steering wheel includes buttons for media and driver assistance functions.
Platform, Battery, and Performance
The Polo EV is Volkswagen’s first model built on the MEB+ (MEB Entry) platform. Battery options include 38 kWh and 56 kWh packs. The larger battery variant offers a range of up to 451 km. All versions will feature front-wheel drive and support DC fast charging up to 125 kW. The GTI variant will deliver a maximum power output of 226 hp.
