ABB E-Mobility OM X-Series Launch

ABB E-mobility has unveiled the OM X-Series, a distributed charging platform designed for high-duty-cycle and megawatt-scale electric vehicle charging. The new system targets transit depots, logistics hubs, and public charging corridors, offering scalable configurations from 800 kW to over 10 MW. This platform aims to replace isolated charging clusters with a coordinated, site-level architecture that can support more than 100 charging points.

Key Highlights

  • ABB E-mobility introduces OM X-Series for megawatt-scale EV charging applications
  • System supports 800 kW to over 10 MW across more than 100 charging points
  • End-to-end liquid-cooled power path achieves over 98 percent conversion efficiency
  • Platform enables dynamic power sharing and improved round-trip efficiency with DC bus architecture

Key Features of the OM X-Series

The OM X-Series incorporates an end-to-end liquid-cooled power path. This includes a power cabinet with an integrated cooling unit, liquid-cooled power modules, and liquid-cooled charging cables. ABB E-mobility reports that its liquid-cooled silicon carbide modules achieve conversion efficiency greater than 98 percent during continuous operation. The system is built for sustained load conditions, making it suitable for applications where chargers must operate for extended periods.

The architecture features built-in redundancy to ensure operational continuity during both planned and unplanned interruptions. The platform uses a site-level DC bus, allowing cabinets and storage assets to share power dynamically based on real-time demand. Battery energy storage can connect directly to the DC bus, which, according to ABB, improves round-trip efficiency by more than five percentage points compared to traditional AC-coupled systems. This setup also supports peak shaving and demand management functions.

Scalability and Integration

The initial configuration of the OM X-Series includes two 800kW cabinets connected through a DC bus, supporting up to 24 charging outputs. ABB E-mobility states that the platform can scale to multi-megawatt deployments without major civil modifications. The OM X-Series and the previously launched OM M-Series use a common dispenser portfolio. This allows operators to expand from M-Series installations to X-Series configurations as charging requirements increase.

ABB E-mobility introduced the A-Series high-power chargers in 2024 and launched the OM M-Series split charging system in April 2026. The company emphasizes that the X-Series is designed for mission profiles requiring systems to operate under sustained load for years. Michael Halbherr, CEO of ABB E-mobility, highlighted the importance of thermal stability and energy efficiency at high utilization levels.

CarBike 360 Says

ABB E-Mobility's OM X-Series marks a pivotal advancement in EV infrastructure, enabling scalable, efficient megawatt charging for demanding fleets and hubs. With liquid cooling, DC bus integration, and built-in redundancy, it ensures uptime and future-proof growth without rework. As electrification accelerates, this innovation empowers operators to deliver sustainable, high-utilization energy.
