Bajaj leads alternative fuel innovations in India.
The Indian automotive industry has taken a significant step forward in adopting alternative fuels. With the recent shift towards E20 fuels, Bajaj Auto is already showcasing a motorcycle prototype that goes beyond—introducing the Bajaj Pulsar Ethanol Flex Fuel Motorcycle, capable of running on 100% Ethanol (E100).
Bajaj’s Commitment to Alternative Fuels
Bajaj Auto, one of India’s leading motorcycle manufacturers, has been a pioneer in exploring alternative fuels. Known for pushing the boundaries of eco-friendly technology, Bajaj previously launched the world's first CNG motorcycle, the Freedom 125. Now, the company is expanding its innovation with ethanol-based powertrains.
At the India Bio-Energy & Tech (IBET) Expo 2024, Bajaj unveiled a prototype of the Pulsar NS160 Ethanol Flex Fuel Motorcycle, demonstrating their expertise in flex-fuel technology. This motorcycle showcases the potential for ethanol as a sustainable alternative to conventional petrol.

Ethanol: The Future of Fuel
Ethanol has been gaining traction as a cleaner and greener fuel alternative. The Pulsar NS160 displayed at the IBET Expo is capable of running on E100 fuel, meaning it can operate on 100% ethanol. It is also compatible with various ethanol-gasoline blends, offering flexibility in fuel choices.
However, designing a motorcycle to run on ethanol requires significant engineering adjustments. Ethanol absorbs moisture, which can lead to internal corrosion over time. To address this, Bajaj has re-engineered the fuel tank, fuel delivery systems, and electronic control unit (ECU) to ensure durability and optimal performance. The ECU is intelligent enough to recognize different ethanol blends and adjust the engine's parameters accordingly.
Bajaj’s Experience with Ethanol in Global Markets
Bajaj Auto’s expertise with ethanol is not new. The company has been active in the Brazilian market, where it already sells motorcycles capable of running on E27 fuel blends. The ethanol-powered Pulsar NS160 showcased in India looks almost identical to its standard counterpart, with modifications primarily focused on fuel storage and delivery systems. The motorcycle is equipped with a 160.3cc single-cylinder, 4-valve, oil-cooled engine, paired with a 5-speed gearbox—similar to the standard NS160 model.

The Future of Ethanol in India
India has been making significant strides towards greener fuels, recently transitioning from E10 to E20 fuel systems. Bajaj Auto’s advancements with ethanol could place them at the forefront of the industry when the country shifts towards higher ethanol blends in the future. While the widespread use of E100 fuels is not yet mainstream, it is clear that higher ethanol blends will play a crucial role in the future of internal combustion engine (ICE) motorcycles and scooters.
With its strong commitment to alternative fuels and continuous innovation, Bajaj Auto is poised to lead the charge in India’s transition towards greener, more sustainable mobility solutions.
CMV360 Says
The Bajaj Pulsar Ethanol Flex Fuel Motorcycle represents a glimpse into the future of motorcycles in India. As the country moves towards higher ethanol fuel standards, Bajaj is well-prepared to meet the demands of a greener tomorrow with innovative solutions like the Pulsar NS160 Ethanol Flex Fuel.
