Volvo's latest electric sedan, the ES90, is expected to have a big influence on the electric vehicle (EV) industry. The ES90 is positioned as a high-end flagship vehicle for Volvo's upcoming generation of advanced EVs and is scheduled for a global unveiling in March 2025 at an event in Stockholm, Sweden. This car is built to compete with luxury rivals like the Mercedes-Benz EQE and BMW i5. It demonstrates a strong emphasis on innovation and technology.
Platform and Design
The EX90 electric SUV and the Volvo ES90 are both built on the custom SPA2 platform. This platform guarantees that the ES90 acts as a technology showcase for the brand by supporting a number of cutting-edge features. Both the S90 sedan and the EX90 SUV have references in the car's external design, including:
- Closed-off grille
- Iconic ‘Thor’s hammer’ LED headlights
- Upright rear light design
Despite its luxury appeal, the ES90 is crafted with a clear focus on practicality and the global market, with primary production taking place in China.
Dimensions and Variants
With an anticipated length of 4,999mm and a wheelbase of 3,100mm, the ES90 will offer more inside space. There will be two primary powertrain options for the sedan:
- Single-motor rear-wheel-drive
- Dual-motor all-wheel-drive
As normal, the dual-motor version should produce 402 horsepower; a more potent 502 horsepower Performance model is also being developed. For the single-motor variant, an amazing 600km range will be supported by a 111kWh battery.
Technology and Features
Future Volvo models will be able to take advantage of ongoing software improvements thanks to the tech stack's goal of unifying them. To further improve its safety credentials, the ES90 is anticipated to come equipped with the lidar safety scanner that is present in the EX90. The ES90 will adopt the advanced Volvo Cars Superset ‘tech stack’, incorporating the latest software and hardware innovations for:
- Driving and infotainment systems
- Autonomous capabilities
- Over-the-air updates
Expected Specifications
- Length: 4,999mm
- Wheelbase: 3,100mm
- Powertrain: Single-motor RWD and dual-motor AWD
- Battery: 111kWh
- Range: Up to 600km
- Power Output: 402hp (standard AWD), 502hp (Performance AWD)
Stay tuned for further updates as Volvo releases more details about the ES90 ahead of its global debut in March 2025.
Future Outlook and Other Models
The Volvo ES90 will join Volvo’s growing electric lineup, which currently includes:
- EX30 compact SUV
- XC40/EX40 compact SUVs
- C40/EC40 crossovers
- Flagship EX90 SUV
- EM90 MPV (exclusive to China)
Looking ahead, Volvo plans to launch the EX60 in 2026, the EV counterpart to the popular XC60, aimed at bolstering global EV sales.
