Ampere bets big on sub-Rs 1 lakh electric two-wheelers to power next phase growth
Ampere is sharpening its focus on affordable, sub-Rs 1 lakh electric scooters to take on high-volume petrol rivals and secure a stronger foothold in India’s fiercely competitive EV two-wheeler market.

Greaves Electric Mobility will maintain its focus on the sub-Rs 1 lakh electric two-wheeler segment for its Ampere brand. The company sees affordability as the key driver for electric vehicle adoption in India's mass market. Managing Director Vikas Singh stated that the value segment offers the largest and most sustainable opportunity as competition increases across price bands.
Key Highlights
- Ampere will focus on sub-Rs 1 lakh electric two-wheelers for growth
- Market share increased to 4.4 percent with 61,641 units registered in FY2026
- Plans to launch a sixth-generation mass-market electric scooter in FY2027
- International expansion started with launches in Nepal and orders from the Philippines
- IPO to raise Rs 1,000 crore for product development and manufacturing expansion
Value Segment as Growth Driver
Singh emphasized Ampere's strong presence in the value segment, defined as electric two-wheelers priced at Rs 1 lakh and below. He noted that this segment is crucial in India, where most of the population seeks affordable mobility solutions. The company will continue to prioritize this area as competitors also target entry-level electric scooters.
Singh explained that Ampere's established base in the value segment gives it a structural advantage as the market expands beyond early adopters. He said moving from value to premium products, as seen with the Nexus model, is easier for the company. In contrast, many competitors are trying to move down from premium to value segments.
Ampere's current lineup includes entry-level scooters like the Reo 80 and premium models such as the Nexus. This range allows the brand to serve both first-time buyers and those seeking more features. The company plans to launch a sixth-generation mass-market electric scooter in financial year 2027, aiming to replace petrol-powered models in the sub-Rs 1 lakh category.
Market Share and Expansion Plans
Greaves Electric Mobility aims for a double-digit market share in the electric two-wheeler segment. The company supports this goal with regular product updates and a growing retail network. In February 2026, Ampere ranked fifth in monthly electric two-wheeler retail sales, delivering 4,478 units and surpassing Ola Electric for the month.
By financial year 2026, Ampere increased its market share by about 85 basis points to 4.4%. Registrations rose 51% to 61,641 units. The company now operates in around 27 states through more than 500 dealers. Singh said that achieving scale is essential for profitability as competition and pricing pressures rise.
Product Strategy and International Expansion
Greaves Electric Mobility will continue a disciplined product rollout, introducing new models at regular intervals. The company is consolidating its vehicle platforms into a single scalable structure to improve development efficiency and reduce production costs. This approach will help maintain competitive pricing in the value segment while expanding the product range.
The company has also started building an international presence. It recently launched products in Nepal and secured repeat orders in the Philippines. Greaves Electric plans to expand overseas operations gradually, focusing on markets where its pricing and product positioning fit local demand. Exports will complement domestic growth and help diversify revenue streams.
Investment and Future Plans
Greaves Electric Mobility is preparing for an initial public offering to raise Rs 1,000 crore. The funds will support product development, technology upgrades, and manufacturing expansion. Investments will strengthen the technology center in Bengaluru and establish an in-house battery pack assembly line at the Ranipet facility in Tamil Nadu by financial year 2027. The company currently sources battery packs from external suppliers and works with multiple vendors across Asia for cell procurement.
CarBike 360 Says
Ampere’s renewed push into the sub-Rs 1 lakh electric two-wheeler space underlines a clear strategy: win where the volumes are, without compromising on performance, technology, or running costs. By targeting mass-market petrol scooter buyers with compelling EV alternatives, the brand is positioning itself to ride the next big wave of India’s electric mobility transition.
