Anurag Mehrotra, Vice President of International Business and Strategy at Tata Motors’ Commercial Vehicles division, has stepped down from his role, marking the end of a significant chapter in his automotive career. According to industry sources, Mehrotra is expected to join JSW MG Motor as its CEO, though the company has not confirmed the appointment.
Mehrotra joined Tata Motors in October 2021, bringing over two decades of expertise in the automotive sector. During his tenure, he was instrumental in bolstering Tata Motors’ commercial vehicle presence in key international markets such as Egypt and Thailand. His efforts were pivotal in reducing the company’s dependency on the cyclical domestic commercial vehicle market. Mehrotra also spearheaded the launch of flagship products like the Tata Prima and Tata Ultra, reinforcing Tata’s position as a leader in commercial vehicles.
A Tata Motors spokesperson confirmed his resignation, though further details regarding his departure remain undisclosed.
A Proven Track Record of Leadership
Before Tata Motors, Mehrotra served as Managing Director of Ford India, where his leadership was transformative. He implemented the Emerging Market Operating Model (EMOM), cutting structural costs by 37% and increasing profitability. Ford India’s revenue grew from ₹19,000 crore in FY17 to over ₹24,000 crore in FY19 under his guidance, while the company transitioned from a ₹521 crore loss in FY17 to a ₹500 crore profit in FY18.
In addition to driving profitability, Mehrotra focused on boosting exports and managing operations with a sharp eye on efficiency. His career at Ford India spanned multiple leadership roles in marketing and sales before his promotion to President and Managing Director.
However, Mehrotra’s journey at Ford India ended in 2021 following the company’s decision to cease domestic car production. This development came after a proposed joint venture between Ford and Mahindra & Mahindra was canceled in December 2020 due to pandemic-induced challenges and global economic uncertainty.
Expected Role at JSW MG Motor
Mehrotra’s anticipated appointment as CEO of JSW MG Motor comes at a critical time for the company. Jointly owned by JSW and China’s SAIC, JSW MG Motor is reportedly undergoing a significant management restructuring across departments, including sales, marketing, HR, and administration.
With plans to triple vehicle volumes over the next three to five years, JSW MG Motor is betting on Mehrotra’s extensive experience in navigating both domestic and international markets. His ability to execute long-term strategies and lead organizational transformations is expected to play a central role in the company’s growth trajectory.
While JSW MG Motor has yet to comment on Mehrotra’s appointment, his potential arrival signals a renewed focus on strengthening the brand’s market presence and operational efficiency in the highly competitive automotive sector.
As Mehrotra transitions into this new chapter, the industry will be closely watching how his leadership shapes the future of JSW MG Motor and its ambitious growth plans.
